BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

First John 4:16 tells believers that they have come to know and trust the love God has for them, and that God’s very nature is love. The person who lives in that love lives in God, and God lives in them. The apostle John wrote this to the church, the community of believers scattered across the Roman world in the late first century, who needed to be reminded where their confidence rests.

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

What 1 John 4:16 Means

The verse begins with a statement of knowledge: “We know and have believed.” John is not describing a vague feeling. He is saying that the church has received God’s love through experience and through the truth that was taught to them, and they have chosen to rely on it. The love in view is God’s love directed toward us, the kind of love that moves first and does not wait for us to earn it.

Then John makes the central claim: “God is love.” This is a statement about who God is, not simply a description of something God occasionally does. Love is part of his character, so everything he does toward people flows from that nature. The verse then says that the one who “remains in love” remains in God. To remain means to stay, to dwell, to keep living in a settled way. It is an ongoing relationship, not a single moment of decision.

What the verse does not promise is a life without struggle. It does not say that everything will feel comfortable or that doubts will never come. It describes a shared dwelling place: God stays with those who stay in love, and love is the atmosphere in which that closeness is lived out.

The Context of 1 John 4:16

First John is a letter that addresses believers facing confusion about what authentic faith looks like. In the verses just before this one, John points to the Spirit that God has given, the confession that Jesus is the Son of God, and the testimony that the Father sent the Son as Savior of the world. Verse 16 sits at the center of this cluster of assurances, summarizing them in a single claim about God’s love and our dwelling in it.

The verses that follow make the link explicit. John says that love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, and that “perfect love casts out fear.” Because the verse is embedded in this passage, the love it describes is not an abstract sentiment. It is the love that gives confidence before God and frees believers from dread, which is why the surrounding text helps us read verse 16 as a source of security rather than pressure.

Key Phrases in 1 John 4:16

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

Verse 18 follows directly on the heels of verse 16 and explains its effect on the believer. Because God’s love is perfect, it casts out fear, showing that the confidence described in verse 16 is not only comforting but freeing.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul’s list of things that cannot separate us from God’s love reinforces the steadiness John describes. Both passages reveal that the love God has for us is secure, lasting, and not dependent on our circumstances.

A Short Prayer From 1 John 4:16

Father, you have shown us your love and you are love itself. Help me to know that love and to rest in it, not only in my thoughts but in the way I live each day. When fear rises or when I feel far from you, remind me that you remain with those who remain in love. Keep me near you, and let your love shape how I think, speak, and act toward others. Amen.
