BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

1 Timothy 3:13 says that people who serve the church well earn a good reputation among others and gain confident boldness in their faith in Christ Jesus. Paul wrote this to Timothy, his younger colleague in ministry, as part of practical instructions about choosing and testing leaders for the congregation in Ephesus.

For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

What 1 Timothy 3:13 Means

The verse begins with “those who have served well,” which refers to the deacons Paul has just described. Serving well means carrying out the role faithfully, honestly and with good character, not merely holding the position. Paul is speaking about the quality of the work and the life behind it.

The “good standing” is the respect a person builds within the community and in the wider world. Faithful, unselfish service tends to earn trust, and that trust becomes a kind of credibility that makes it easier for them to speak and act with authority. The phrase describes a reputation earned over time, not an honor handed out automatically.

The “great boldness in the faith” is the confidence that comes from living out what one believes. Paul does not promise that faithful servants will never face fear or opposition. He describes a settled assurance that grows as a person trusts Christ in practice. The verse describes what faithful service produces in a person and in the church. It does not guarantee success, rewards on earth or freedom from hardship.

The Context of 1 Timothy 3:13

First Timothy is one of the letters traditionally attributed to Paul, written to Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus. The letter gives practical guidance on order in the church, sound teaching and the qualities needed in those who hold responsibility. Verse 13 sits within a passage about deacons, which begins in verse 8 and lists the character traits expected of them.

Just before verse 13, Paul says that candidates must first be tested and must be blameless, and he addresses the conduct of their wives and their management of their households. Verse 13 is the promise that follows: faithfulness in these ordinary and demanding areas leads to the standing and confidence he describes. Read this way, the verse is a practical encouragement to take daily faithfulness seriously, not a separate claim about spiritual status.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 3:13

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse urges believers to work wholeheartedly as serving the Lord rather than merely people. It shows the same motive behind faithful service that 1 Timothy 3:13 describes, grounding diligence in devotion to Christ.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, since a harvest comes in its proper time. It complements the verse’s theme by reminding readers that steady faithfulness is worth continuing even when results are slow to appear.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 3:13

Lord, you see the quiet work that no one applauds: the meals prepared, the hours given, the honest word spoken at the right moment. Help me to serve faithfully and well, not for applause but because you are worthy of my best effort. Build in me a good name that reflects your character, and give me the steady confidence that comes from trusting Christ Jesus. Where I feel weary or unseen, remind me that you notice every act of faithfulness. Amen.
