Second Corinthians 2:17 means that Paul’s preaching was not a business transaction. He and his companions did not sell God’s message for profit the way some traveling teachers did, but spoke it honestly, as people who answer to God and speak from a real relationship with Christ. Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth, a congregation he had founded and who had been influenced by rival teachers questioning his credentials and motives.

For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ.

What 2 Corinthians 2:17 Means

The verse begins with a contrast. “Not as so many” points to a crowd of people who treated the word of God as merchandise. The Greek word behind “peddling” describes a street trader who waters down his wine to make more money, which gives you a vivid picture of someone who adjusts the message to suit the buyer. Paul says he and his fellow workers refuse to do that.

The positive side of the verse has three phrases that build on one another: “of sincerity,” “of God,” and “in the sight of God.” Together they say that Paul’s speaking comes from a pure motive, flows from God’s commission, and happens under God’s watchful eye. The verse ends by saying this speaking happens “in Christ,” meaning the message is shaped by union with Christ rather than by human approval. It does not promise that every sincere speaker will be well received, and it does not promise any particular result from preaching. It describes the posture of the speaker.

The Context of 2 Corinthians 2:17

Second Corinthians is one of Paul’s most personal letters. He writes out of pain and relief after a painful visit and a tense exchange with the Corinthians, and he defends his ministry against people who judged him by his polished speaking, his lack of letters of recommendation, and his suffering. The letter moves from thanksgiving to a long defense of the new covenant ministry.

The verses just before this one, 2:14 through 2:16, speak of God leading Paul in triumph and spreading the aroma of Christ’s knowledge through his life. Those images explain why verse 17 matters. Paul is not a salesman sharing a product but a messenger carrying a fragrance he did not manufacture. Read in this setting, the verse guards the gospel from being turned into a commodity, and it shows that the authority of Paul’s words rests on God’s work rather than on his own cleverness.

Key Phrases in 2 Corinthians 2:17

1 Thessalonians 2:4

But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.

(WEB)

This verse says that Paul and his companions were approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, and that they speak to please God rather than people. It echoes the same concern for God’s approval over human praise that runs through 2 Corinthians 2:17.

Galatians 1:10

For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.

(WEB)

Paul asks whether he is trying to win human approval or God’s, and states that he would not be a servant of Christ if he were still trying to please people. This connects directly to the warning against treating the gospel as a way to gain favor with an audience.

A Short Prayer From 2 Corinthians 2:17

Lord, you have entrusted us with your word, and you know the places in our hearts where we are tempted to bend it for our own comfort or gain. Search our motives and make our speech sincere. When we speak of you, let us do so as those who stand in your sight and answer to you alone. Give us courage to say what is true, kindness in how we say it, and trust that the results belong to you. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen.
