BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Second Peter 2:13 warns that people who live for indulgence and deceit will receive the consequence their wrongdoing has earned, and that their hidden sin is being carried out right in the middle of the community of faith. The verse is part of Peter’s strong warning against false teachers who lead others astray while enjoying the benefits of belonging to the church. The letter is traditionally attributed to the apostle Peter and is addressed to believers facing dangerous influences within their fellowship.

Receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and defects, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you…

What 2 Peter 2:13 Means

Peter begins with the idea of “receiving the wages of unrighteousness.” A wage is what someone earns by their work, and Peter says these people are earning the pay that wrongdoing produces. The consequence is not random. It follows from the path they have chosen. The verse does not spell out every detail of how this will unfold, but it makes clear that sin always carries a cost, even when it looks profitable for a season.

Next Peter describes these people as those who “count it pleasure to revel in the daytime.” Revelry was a public kind of partying, and doing it in daylight shows that they feel no need to hide. Peter then calls them “spots and defects,” language that pictures stains and blemishes on the life of a community. The final phrase, about reveling in their deceit while they feast with you, shows that they sit at the same meals as ordinary believers while pursuing something false and self-serving.

What the verse does not promise is that every sinner will be exposed instantly or that God’s judgment is always visible in this life. Peter is describing a pattern and a certainty about the end, not offering a timetable. It is a warning meant to produce discernment and perseverance in those who are watching.

The Context of 2 Peter 2:13

Second Peter was written to a congregation that had heard the gospel and was now being threatened by people who twisted it for their own gain. Peter’s concern runs through the whole chapter: false teachers introduce destructive ideas, deny the Lord who bought them, and draw others into their lifestyle. The audience would have recognized the danger because the false teachers were sitting at their tables and sharing in their gatherings, which is the setting behind the phrase “while they feast with you.”

The verses just before this one describe the arrogance and recklessness of these teachers, and the verses just after describe their eyes full of adultery and their hearts trained in greed. In the surrounding passage, Peter also points to Balaam as an example of someone who loved the wages of wrongdoing. Because verse 13 sits between these descriptions, it reads as the conclusion of a sustained portrait: the wages are not only future judgment but the spiritual ruin already present in their conduct.

Key Phrases in 2 Peter 2:13

Jude 1:12

These are hidden rocky reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you, shepherds who without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots…

(WEB)

Jude describes similar people who feast without fear and care only for themselves. Reading it alongside Second Peter shows that this warning about hidden corruption in the church was shared among the early Christian writers.

Proverbs 10:9

He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.

(WEB)

This proverb affirms that the person who walks in integrity walks securely, while the one who twists his ways will be found out. It supports the principle that deceit cannot ultimately stay concealed.

A Short Prayer From 2 Peter 2:13

Lord, you see what is hidden in the hearts of people and in the corners of our lives. Guard me from the pull of pleasure that slowly turns into deceit, and give me a clear conscience before you and before those I sit with at the table. Help me to recognize false teaching and empty living when I see it, and make me faithful in my own walk. Where I have already compromised, lead me to honesty and repentance. Thank you that you are a God who judges rightly and who keeps your people. Amen.
