BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Second Timothy 1:13 tells Timothy to keep hold of the pattern of healthy, sound teaching he received from Paul, and to do it with faith and love that rest on Christ Jesus. Paul is writing near the end of his life, from prison, to his younger co-worker Timothy, whom he had set over the church in Ephesus.

Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

What 2 Timothy 1:13 Means

The verse begins with a command: “hold” the pattern. The picture is of gripping something firmly so it will not slip out of your hand. Paul is not asking Timothy to invent new teaching or to be clever about doctrine. He is asking him to keep a shape or outline of truth that has already been handed to him, the basic faithful summary of the gospel.

The phrase “sound words” points to teaching that is healthy and true, the kind that builds people up in faith rather than sickening them with speculation and argument. The verse then says how this holding is to be done: “in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” Faith and love are not extras added to doctrine. They are the atmosphere in which true teaching is kept, and both are rooted in Christ himself.

What the verse does not promise is that holding onto sound teaching will make every question easy or every struggle disappear. It describes a responsibility Timothy carries and a posture Christians are called to keep, not a guarantee of an outcome.

The Context of 2 Timothy 1:13

Second Timothy is one of the Pastoral Epistles, traditionally attributed to Paul, written to Timothy, a young leader Paul had trained and sent to strengthen churches. The letter has the feel of a farewell. Paul is imprisoned, expects his death, and wants to pass the work of the gospel to a faithful successor.

The verses just before this one emphasize Paul’s own steadiness: he is not ashamed, because he knows whom he has believed and trusts God to guard what has been entrusted to him. Verse 13 turns that confidence outward. Paul has held the gospel firmly, and now he tells Timothy to hold it in the same way. Verse 14 continues the thought, urging Timothy to guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit. Read this way, verse 13 is less a rule imposed from outside and more a handing down of a faithful pattern from one generation to the next.

Key Phrases in 2 Timothy 1:13

2 Timothy 1:14

That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

Verse 14 continues Paul’s charge, telling Timothy to guard the good deposit entrusted to him through the Holy Spirit who lives in believers. It shows that holding sound teaching is not merely a matter of human effort but depends on God’s indwelling help.

1 Corinthians 11:2

Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you.

(WEB)

In this verse Paul commends the Corinthian believers for holding to the traditions he taught them. It reflects the same concern for faithfully receiving and keeping the teaching handed down, showing that this was a shared apostolic priority.

A Short Prayer From 2 Timothy 1:13

Lord, you have given us a faith that was handed down to us through people who loved us and taught us your truth. Help us to hold fast to what is sound and good, not out of stubbornness, but out of trust in you. Fill our faith and our love with your presence, rooted in Christ Jesus, so that we may speak and live in a way that honors you. Give us wisdom and gentleness when we are tested, and let our grip on your word grow firmer each day. Amen.
