BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Second Timothy 2:8 tells the believer to keep Jesus Christ in mind, specifically as the One who rose from the dead and who comes from David’s family line. Paul wrote these words to his younger co-worker Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus, and he gave the instruction while he was imprisoned for preaching the gospel.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the offspring of David, according to my Good News…

What 2 Timothy 2:8 Means

The verse begins with a command: “Remember.” Paul is not asking Timothy to recall a fact for a test. He wants Timothy to keep a particular truth at the center of his mind, so that his preaching, his courage, and his endurance rest on it. The word points to something that should shape how we think and act, not only what we know.

The truth to remember is “Jesus Christ, risen from the dead.” Paul names Jesus as the crucified man who was raised, and he treats the resurrection as the decisive proof that God has acted in history. Then he adds “of the offspring of David,” which ties Jesus to the royal promises God made to David in the Old Testament. Paul is saying that the Messiah promised to Israel has come, died, and been vindicated by God, and that this is the news he has been preaching, which he calls “my Good News.”

The verse does not promise Timothy an easy ministry or a life free from suffering. Its focus is on the person and work of Jesus. The strength to keep going, Paul implies, comes from holding tightly to who Jesus is and what God has done through him.

The Context of 2 Timothy 2:8

Second Timothy is traditionally attributed to Paul, written near the end of his life while he was in prison in Rome. It is a personal letter to Timothy, whom Paul calls his beloved child in the faith, urging him to stay faithful, to guard the teaching he received, and to be willing to endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

The verses just before and after set the tone. Paul compares Timothy to an athlete who must compete by the rules and a farmer who must work hard before sharing in the harvest. In verse 8 he turns to the foundation of all his preaching, and in verse 9 he admits that he is suffering chains as a criminal for it. The remembrance of the risen Christ is therefore not an abstract thought in this passage. It is the reason Paul can keep enduring, and the reason he can say that God’s word is not bound even when he is.

Key Phrases in 2 Timothy 2:8

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures…

Paul summarizes the gospel here as Christ’s death for our sins, His burial, and His rising on the third day according to the Scriptures. It is the fullest statement of the message Paul asks Timothy to remember in 2 Timothy 2:8.

Romans 1:3-4

3 Concerning his Son, who was born of the offspring of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord…

In this passage Paul also describes Jesus as descended from David according to the flesh and declared Son of God by the resurrection from the dead. It shows how Paul consistently linked Davidic descent with the resurrection in his teaching.

A Short Prayer From 2 Timothy 2:8

Lord Jesus, You are risen from the dead and You are the descendant of David who fulfills Your promises. Help me to remember You today, not only when life feels clear but also when it feels heavy and confusing. Keep the truth of Your resurrection near my heart so that my choices, words, and endurance rest on You. Strengthen me to hold fast to the good news entrusted to me, and let Your living presence steady me in every hard moment. Amen.
