BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 5:20 is a warning against being drawn into an affair. A father is asking his son why he would let himself become absorbed in another man’s wife, or with a woman who is not his own. The verse calls the son back to loyalty and self-control, rooted in the reality that God sees everything a person does.

For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another?

What Proverbs 5:20 Means

The verse opens with a direct question, “why should you, my son,” which is less an accusation than a plea for common sense. The father is asking the son to see how foolish it would be to give his attention to someone outside his marriage. The word “captivated” points to being caught and held, like a bird in a snare. The picture is of a man who has wandered into a trap without noticing it.

The second question, “Why embrace the bosom of another?”, uses an image of physical closeness to describe intimacy that belongs only within marriage. The verse is blunt on purpose. It names the desire and the danger together so that the son cannot pretend the matter is harmless.

What the verse does not do is promise a clean, painless life for the faithful. It describes a wise choice and the reasons behind it. Proverbs usually teaches that wisdom leads to good outcomes and folly to ruin, but it presents this as the general shape of life rather than a tidy formula. The verse is an appeal to choose well, not a guarantee that choosing well will shield anyone from every hardship.

The Context of Proverbs 5:20

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, with additional material from other wise teachers. It is written as instruction from a parent to a child, and it assumes a young man who is learning how to live as an adult in a community. Its audience is the next generation, and its goal is to form character through clear, memorable teaching.

The verses just before and after Proverbs 5:20 explain why the warning matters. Verses 17 through 19 celebrate faithful love within marriage and call the son to find his satisfaction in his own wife. Verses 21 through 23 remind him that the LORD sees all his paths and that the sinful choices of the wicked tend to trap them. Read in this setting, the verse is not a stand-alone rule. It is one part of a larger picture in which faithfulness is joyful, sin is a snare, and God is watching over every decision.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:20

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

(WEB)

This verse urges the reader to guard the heart above all else, because the direction of life flows from it. It pairs naturally with Proverbs 5:20 by showing that temptation is first a matter of the inner life before it becomes visible action.

Hebrews 13:4

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

(WEB)

Hebrews 13:4 honors marriage as something held in high regard and calls God the judge of sexual immorality. It extends the warning of Proverbs 5:20 into the wider New Testament witness on faithfulness and the seriousness with which God treats it.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:20

Lord, you see every path I walk and you know the places where my heart is drawn away. Give me wisdom to notice when my attention begins to wander toward what is not mine to hold. Strengthen my commitments, and help me to rejoice in the good gifts you have already placed in my life. When I feel the pull of temptation, draw me back to you and to the people I am called to love faithfully. Amen.
