Proverbs 1:10 is a short command to a young person: when people who do wrong try to draw you into their plans, do not agree to join them. The verse is part of a father’s counsel to his son, which means the instruction is personal, practical, and rooted in love. It is not a lecture on crime in general but a warning about the moment when a friendship or group starts to pressure you toward harm.

My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

What Proverbs 1:10 Means

The phrase “My son” signals that this is a parent speaking to a child, which is how the whole first chapter of Proverbs is framed. The word “sinners” here refers to people who deliberately live against what is right and good, not to people who simply struggle. “Entice” describes gentle, persuasive pressure, the kind that feels like an invitation rather than a threat. That detail matters, because the danger the verse names is often attractive at first.

The command “don’t consent” is short and direct. It asks for a clear refusal rather than a debate or a negotiation. The verse does not promise that every temptation will be easy to resist or that the people involved will stop trying. What it does is establish a settled answer ahead of time, so that the decision is already made when the invitation arrives.

The Context of Proverbs 1:10

The book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon, with other sections credited to different wise teachers, and it is written as a collection of instruction aimed at a young man entering adult life. The first nine chapters use the format of a father speaking to his son, and the audience is anyone who wants to learn how to live wisely. The opening verses name the fear of the LORD as the beginning of knowledge, so the warning in verse 10 sits inside a larger picture of learning to live in reverence for God.

Just before verse 10, the father says that his son’s parents’ teaching will be a garland on the head and chains around the neck, a picture of honor and protection. Just after it, verses 11 through 13 quote the sinners’ own words, inviting the son to share in ambush, violence, and quick profit. Read in this setting, verse 10 is the hinge: it moves from the parents’ wisdom to the specific invitation the son is about to hear, and it tells him how to respond.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 1:10

Proverbs 1:15

My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path…

(WEB)

This verse continues the same warning and gives the father’s direct instruction to keep your feet from the path of those who walk in violence. It reinforces the point of verse 10 by naming the way of life to avoid.

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers…

(WEB)

Psalm 1 opens with a blessing on the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, which echoes Proverbs 1:10 and shows that refusing bad company is a theme across the wisdom books.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 1:10

Lord, you know how easily I can be drawn into things that look appealing but lead away from you. Give me a clear mind when others invite me to join them in what is wrong, and help me to say no before I am already halfway in. Let my refusal come from a settled love for what is good rather than from fear of being rejected. Keep the people I care about safe, and surround me with friends who help me walk in your ways. Amen.
