This is a short prayer for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the lights are going off. It gives you words to hand over what you carried today, to ask for rest and protection through the night, and to thank God for the day that is now ending. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and say in your own words whatever the day has left on your heart.
Short Prayer Before Bedtime
Lord, thank you for this day, with its ordinary hours and its surprises. Thank you for the work I finished, the conversations I had, and the moments of kindness I received without expecting them. Thank you for the food on the table and the roof over our heads, and for the people who share this home or this street with me tonight.
Now I bring you what I could not carry any further. I am tired, and some of today’s worries are still sitting in my chest: the call I have to return, the bills that do not quite add up, the sharp words I wish I had not said. I give them to you and ask you to take them from my hands. Where I failed today, forgive me, and where someone else failed me, help me let it go so I can sleep without rehearsing it again.
Watch over my family and the people I love tonight, especially those who are awake with pain, fear, or grief. Guard our sleep and keep harm far from our doors. Be near to anyone who is alone in a hospital room, a rented room, or a car in the dark, and let them feel your presence. Give me rest that is not only the absence of work but the peace of knowing I am held. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and ready for rest. Thank you for today, even the hard parts. I set down what I could not finish and the things I could not fix, and I ask you to take them. Guard my family while we sleep, and let me wake tomorrow with a lighter heart. Thank you that I can rest because you are awake and watching over us. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you lie down, letting the words settle your breathing. Say the phrase “in peace” slowly, and ask God to make your rest a true gift rather than a struggle to switch off your thoughts.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse reminds you that you were never meant to hold everything together by staying up late. Read it as permission to stop working, trusting that God gives sleep to those he loves even when the to-do list is unfinished.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Use these lines to hand the night to God as a watchman who does not sleep. Pray for the people in your home and your city, naming them one by one while you rest in the promise that he is awake for them.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus speaks this invitation to people who are weary and burdened, which describes many bedtimes. Pray it as a personal call, and bring him the specific weight you are carrying tonight, one item at a time.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
This passage was written in grief, yet it ends with a fresh start every morning. Pray it as you close the day, thanking God that his faithfulness is not used up by what went wrong and that tomorrow’s mercies are already on their way.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try to pray this prayer after you have turned off the screens and before you get into bed, ideally in the same chair or spot each night so it becomes a familiar rhythm. Keep something in your hands while you speak, such as a pillow, a warm cup, or the edge of your blanket, and let your body slow down as your words do. If you share a room or a home, you can pray it aloud softly, or invite a spouse, child, or friend to pray the blessing over you at the end.
If sleep does not come, return to the shorter version and repeat the line about setting down what you could not finish. Some nights the prayer will feel warm and clear, and other nights it will feel dry and rushed, and both are fine to bring to God. He is not waiting for you to pray well before he hears you.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep you tonight and give you rest that reaches deeper than tiredness. May he guard your going out and your coming in, and wake you in the morning with his mercy new and waiting for you.
