BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about angels, the heavenly beings Scripture describes as God’s messengers, guardians and servants. It is written for anyone who wants to know what the Bible says about them, whether you are curious, anxious, grieving, or simply trying to read Scripture more closely. These verses share a common thread: angels exist to serve God’s purposes, and their presence is one way God cares for the people he has made.

Verses About Angels as God’s Messengers

Throughout the Bible, the word “angel” simply means messenger. These passages show angels carrying God’s words and announcements to people at key moments in the story of salvation. Reading them helps you see how God has always spoken into real human lives.

Luke 1:26-27

26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary.

Here an angel is sent to a young woman in a small town with news that would change history. When you feel overlooked, remember that God sends his messages to ordinary people in ordinary places. Pause today and ask God to show you where he may be speaking into your daily routine.

Matthew 1:20-21

20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”

Joseph is told in a dream not to be afraid, and he obeys. If you are facing a decision you cannot yet understand, this passage reminds you that God can make his direction clear in unexpected ways. Write down one step of obedience you sense God asking for this week.

Luke 2:10-11

10 The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. 11 For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

(WEB)

The angel’s first words to the shepherds are about good news and joy for all the people. When your news feels heavy, consider that these words were spoken to frightened shepherds on a hillside at night. Read this passage aloud slowly, letting the phrase “good news” settle on you before the day begins.

Verses About Angels as Protectors

Scripture also portrays angels as guardians who stand watch over God’s people. These verses speak to moments of danger, fear, and uncertainty, offering assurance that God’s care reaches into hard places.

Psalm 91:11-12

11 For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks of God commanding his angels concerning those who trust him. When you are afraid of a diagnosis, a drive, or a difficult season, this verse reminds you that your safety rests in God’s care. Try repeating these lines slowly in the car or while waiting for the kettle to boil.

Psalm 34:7

The LORD’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

(WEB)

This verse pictures the angel of the Lord camping around those who fear him. If you are feeling surrounded by problems, this image offers a sense of God’s nearness and protection. Consider drawing a simple circle on a piece of paper as a reminder of this promise during your evening prayer.

2 Kings 6:16-17

16 He answered, “Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Elisha prayed, and said, “The LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes; and he saw: and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

(WEB)

Elisha’s servant sees only enemy soldiers until God opens his eyes to the heavenly army surrounding them. When anxiety makes your problems look bigger than God, ask him to open your eyes to what is already true. Pray this request as you start your work or your chores.

Verses About Angels Worshiping God

Angels are not only messengers and guardians; Scripture also shows them worshiping God and joining in his praise. These passages invite you to see worship as something heaven is already doing, and something you are invited into.

Revelation 5:11-12

11 I saw, and I heard something like a voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousands of ten thousands, and thousands of thousands; 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who has been killed to receive the power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing!”

(WEB)

John describes countless angels around the throne singing with a loud voice. When your worship feels small or tired, this vision reminds you that you join a great chorus that has never stopped. Sing one familiar hymn today, even if only quietly.

Psalm 148:2

Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his army!

(WEB)

The psalm calls on all his angels and all his hosts to praise the Lord. If you struggle to find words for praise, this verse gives you a way to begin by naming who God is. Speak three of his attributes aloud each morning before you check your phone.

Isaiah 6:2-3

2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two he covered his face. With two he covered his feet. With two he flew. 3 One called to another, and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!”

(WEB)

Isaiah sees seraphim calling out to one another about God’s holiness. When you feel distant from God, this vision lifts your eyes toward his majesty and reminds you that holiness is at the heart of who he is. Take a moment at lunch to whisper the word “holy” and let it draw your attention upward.

Verses About Angels and Christ

The New Testament shows angels bearing witness to Jesus at his birth, his resurrection, and his return. These verses help you see how angels point toward Christ rather than toward themselves.

Hebrews 1:6

When he again brings in the firstborn into the world he says, “Let all the angels of God worship him.”

(WEB)

The writer of Hebrews says God commands all his angels to worship his Son. If you ever find yourself tempted to put your hope in created things, this verse redirects your worship to Jesus. Consider naming one thing you tend to lean on and offering it to him in prayer today.

Matthew 28:5-6

5 The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.

(WEB)

At the empty tomb, an angel tells the women that Jesus is not here, for he has risen. When grief or disappointment seems final, this announcement shouts that God’s story is not over. Read these words slowly before bed and thank Jesus for the hope of resurrection.

Acts 1:10-11

10 While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing, 11 who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky, will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”

(WEB)

Two men in white clothing tell the disciples that Jesus will return in the same way they saw him go. If the world feels uncertain, this promise gives you a settled hope in Christ’s coming. Pray for patience and faithfulness as you wait for his return.

How to Use These Verses

You might copy a few of these verses onto index cards and place them where you will see them, such as on the bathroom mirror, the dashboard, or beside your Bible. Choose one verse each week and read it at a regular time, perhaps with your morning coffee. Over time, the same passage will speak to you in new ways as your circumstances change.

Read these verses slowly, out loud if you can, and pause after each one to ask God what he wants you to notice. Pray the words back to him in your own language, thanking him for his care through the angels and for Jesus, who is greater than them all. Return to a verse that moved you, rather than rushing to cover the whole list at once.

A Short Prayer About Angels

Lord, thank you for the angels you send as messengers, guardians, and worshipers around your throne. When I feel afraid, help me remember that you are near and that your care reaches into every situation I face. Open my eyes to see what is already true, and steady my heart when the world feels loud and uncertain. Turn my attention toward Jesus, the one who is worthy of all worship, and help me join the praise that never ends. Amen.
