Proverbs 6:19 teaches that God strongly opposes two kinds of harm done with words: lying under oath or in court, and stirring up quarrels between people who ought to be united. The verse belongs to a list of things the Lord hates, and it was written by a father to his son, the teacher’s voice of the book of Proverbs, as advice for living wisely before God and among family and community.

A false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

What Proverbs 6:19 Means

The first phrase, “a false witness who utters lies,” describes someone who speaks falsehood when truth is expected, especially in a setting where testimony decides what happens to others. In ancient Israel a witness’s word could send a person to punishment or clear them, so a lie spoken in that role did real damage. The verse names the person as well as the act, which shows that God looks at the character behind the speech.

The second phrase, “he who sows discord among brothers,” pictures a person planting seeds of suspicion and conflict until relationships grow bitter. The word “brothers” can mean literal siblings, but it also describes fellow members of a community or household. The verse does not promise that God will remove every conflict from life. It does say that deliberately fanning division is something the Lord takes seriously.

The Context of Proverbs 6:19

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally linked to Solomon, and its main audience is a young person being taught how to live with integrity. Chapter 6 opens with warnings about rash promises and laziness, then moves into a list of seven things that are an abomination to the Lord. Verse 19 is the sixth item in that list, placed alongside pride, murder and wicked schemes.

Just after the verse, the passage turns to the instruction of parents: keep your father’s commandment and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Read this way, the warning against lies and division is part of a larger picture of a household shaped by truthfulness and peace. The verse is less a standalone rule than a description of the kind of character that wisdom forms.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 6:19

Ephesians 4:25

Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

Paul ties the call to put away lying to the reality that believers belong to one another. The truthfulness Proverbs 6:19 condemns becomes a daily practice of honest speech within the body of Christ.

James 3:5-6

5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! 6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

James describes the tongue as a small member that can set a great fire. His picture of destructive speech echoes the seed-planting image of discord in Proverbs 6:19.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 6:19

Lord, you see the words I speak when I am tired, angry or afraid, and you know the seeds of division that can grow from my mouth. Help me to tell the truth even when a small lie would be easier. Guard my tongue from careless exaggeration, and show me when silence is wiser than repeating a complaint. Let my speech bring peace to the people around me, so that I do not become one who sows discord among those you have given me to love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
