BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

These prayers are written for anyone who wants to pray for a pastor, whether that is your own pastor, a church leader you have never met, or a minister who is carrying something heavy right now. Pray them on a Sunday morning before worship, during the week when a sermon is being prepared, or whenever a pastor’s name comes to mind. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Pastors

Lord, I lift up the pastors who shepherd your people. Give them wisdom when they open your Word, and let the sermon they prepare be shaped by your truth rather than by their own cleverness. Give them rest when the study hours run long and the phone never stops ringing. Protect them from the quiet exhaustion that comes from always being needed, and remind them that they are your servants before they are anyone’s leader.

Father, I pray for their families too. The pastor’s spouse and children often carry the weight of a public calling without asking for it. Guard their marriages, their friendships and their hearts. Where there is discouragement, lift it. Where there is criticism that is unfair, let them hear your voice more clearly than the noise. Where there is joy in the work, let them savor it and thank you for it.

Lord, give our pastors courage to speak hard truths with love, humility to admit when they are wrong, and faithfulness to keep showing up even when the results are slow to appear. May they never forget that you are the one who builds the church. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for the pastors who are speaking your word this week. Strengthen them where they are weak, rest them where they are tired, and encourage them where they feel unseen. Let your Spirit go with them into every conversation and every pulpit. Keep them close to you, and keep their families close too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:11-12

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor would see their role as a gift Christ gave to the church, given so that God’s people can be equipped and built up. Ask that they would feel equipped themselves.

1 Timothy 4:16

Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

(WEB)

Paul told Timothy to keep a close watch on his own life and teaching. Pray that your pastor would pay attention to their own walk with God as carefully as they attend to the flock.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This verse describes pastors as those who keep watch over souls and will give an account. Pray for them to carry that weight with joy rather than dread, and for the congregation to make their work a delight.

Acts 20:28

Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

(WEB)

Paul charged the Ephesian elders to watch over the flock the Holy Spirit had placed in their care. Pray that your pastor would be guided by the Spirit in caring for the people entrusted to them.

Philippians 1:3-4

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy…

(WEB)

Paul prayed for the Philippians with thankfulness and joy. Pray this for your pastor, asking God to fill them with gratitude for the people they serve and to let that joy show in their prayers for others.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their pastor early in the week, perhaps on Monday or Tuesday, before the sermon is finalized and before the busy weekend begins. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands. Holding something warm can help you slow down and mean each line as you read it.

You do not have to pray alone. Share this prayer with your small group, your family at the dinner table, or a friend who also attends your church. Ask them to pray with you, and consider writing a short note to your pastor letting them know you prayed for them that day. Often a pastor learns of intercession only after the fact, and an encouraging word can be a gift in itself.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who called your pastor be near them every day. May he give them the strength to keep going, the clarity to speak his truth, and the peace that comes from knowing whose they are. May their family feel loved, and may their work bear fruit that lasts. The Lord bless them and keep them.
