BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are written for someone who has recently come to faith in Christ, or for a friend, child or family member who has just made that step. You can pray them when a new believer is wrestling with doubt, adjusting to a changed life, or simply wanting to grow. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for New Believers

Father, thank you for calling this person out of darkness and into your light. They have taken a step that may feel exciting and frightening at the same time. Be near them in the mornings when they wake up unsure what to say to you, and in the evenings when old habits and old friends tug at them. Help them to know that they belong to you, not because they have earned it, but because you have made them your own.

Give them a hunger for your Word that does not depend on how they feel that day. Let them find the Scriptures alive and trustworthy, and help them understand what they read without feeling foolish for the questions they still carry. Surround them with people who will pray with them, answer their honest questions, and love them patiently through their stumbles. Where they feel alone, remind them that you have never left them.

Guard their heart from discouragement when they fail, and let them run to you quickly rather than hiding in shame. Teach them that repentance is a turning back to you, not a punishment they must earn. Grow their faith slowly and steadily, and give them joy in the small, ordinary ways you meet them. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who first loved them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you know the heart of this new believer better than they do. Give them courage to keep following you today, peace where they feel confused, and people who will walk beside them in faith. Keep them close and help them rest in your love, which does not change. Hear this simple prayer from a grateful heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that the old life has passed and ask him to help the new believer grow into the new identity he has already given. Let them see that change is his work from start to finish.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Use this verse when the new believer feels they are failing to change fast enough. Pray that they would trust God to finish what he started, even when progress feels slow and uneven.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray that God’s Word would light the next step for this person, especially when they feel uncertain about a decision. Ask for a daily openness to Scripture as a guide rather than a burden.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this passage over the new believer when fear of rejection or failure creeps in. Ask God to make them sure that nothing can separate them from his love in Christ Jesus.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the new believer faces questions they cannot answer on their own. Ask God to give wisdom generously and without holding their asking against them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for a new believer first thing in the morning, before the day’s noise begins, or at bedtime as a way of handing the day back to God. A quiet chair, a walk, or a kitchen table works well. Keep a pen nearby and write down what the new believer shares with you so you can return to it in later prayers.

Invite others to pray with you, whether a small group, a mentor, or a spouse. If you are praying for someone in your own household, read the prayer aloud together over a shared meal or before bed. Pray in your own words too, because God hears a simple sentence as readily as a full page.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guide your friend’s steps and steady their heart. May Christ be their companion on every road, and may the Spirit remind them daily that they are loved, forgiven and held. May they grow in grace, rest in truth, and find joy in belonging to God.
