Proverbs 3:20 says that the LORD’s knowledge is what lay behind the physical world, from the deep waters beneath the earth to the rain that falls from the sky. Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of much of Proverbs, wrote it to his son as part of a longer call to trust God’s wisdom rather than his own understanding. The verse is less a standalone promise than a reminder of who it is we are trusting.

By his knowledge, the depths were broken up, and the skies drop down the dew.

What Proverbs 3:20 Means

The verse begins with “by his knowledge,” meaning that the LORD’s wise understanding is the reason the world works as it does. The image of the “depths” being broken up points to the deep waters that were thought to lie beneath the earth, which in the ancient Hebrew view had to be divided or opened for life to flourish. The second half speaks of the skies dropping dew, the gentle moisture that keeps crops and pastures alive during dry seasons.

Read simply, the verse says that the same God who made a careful, ordered world is the one who sustains it. Nothing in the physical creation is random or accidental. The rain on your garden and the water beneath the ground both come from a knowledge far greater than ours. The verse does not promise a specific harvest or a particular season of rain. It describes the kind of God who governs creation with skill and purpose.

The Context of Proverbs 3:20

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to shape the character and choices of young people, and chapter 3 is a parent’s appeal to a son to hold tightly to wisdom. Verses 17 and 18 describe wisdom as a tree of life and a path of peace. Verse 19 then grounds that wisdom in the act of creation itself: by wisdom the LORD founded the earth and established the heavens. Verse 20 continues that line of thought.

Seeing this context changes how the verse reads. It is not an isolated nature observation but an argument. Because the world was built by divine wisdom, the wisdom that the LORD offers to people is trustworthy, since it belongs to the same order that holds the skies and the seas together. Verses 21 through 23 then turn that truth into a personal invitation to keep wisdom close and walk through life securely.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 3:20

Job 38:16

“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

(WEB)

Job 38 contains God’s own questions to Job about the foundations of the earth, and this verse asks whether Job has ever entered the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep. It echoes the same mystery found in Proverbs 3:20: the hidden depths of creation are known to God, and human beings are invited to marvel at his knowledge rather than presume to match it.

Psalm 104:13

He waters the mountains from his rooms. The earth is filled with the fruit of your works.

(WEB)

Psalm 104 celebrates God’s care for creation, and this verse describes him watering the mountains from his upper chambers so that the earth is filled with the fruit of his work. It pairs naturally with Proverbs 3:20 by showing that the heavens’ gift of rain is an expression of God’s generous and attentive governance over the world he has made.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 3:20

Lord, you have ordered the depths of the earth and opened the skies to bring rain upon the ground. Your knowledge is far greater than mine, and I thank you that the wisdom I need is rooted in the same care that sustains all creation. Teach me to trust your understanding when my own runs short. Help me to receive your guidance with humility and to walk in it with peace. Let the quiet refreshment of your wisdom reach the dry places in my life, and let me rest in the knowledge that you see and govern all things well. Amen.
