BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Proverbs 5:23 teaches that a person who refuses correction and wisdom is headed toward real loss, and that their own foolishness will carry them off course. The verse is a warning, not a mystery: ignoring instruction has consequences that grow larger the longer a person keeps ignoring it. Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of the book, speaks to his son, a young man who needs to hear that wisdom protects and folly destroys.

He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.

What Proverbs 5:23 Means

The phrase “He will die for lack of instruction” describes a person who will not accept teaching, correction, or guidance. In the book of Proverbs, instruction is more than information. It means being shaped by wise counsel, reproof, and the fear of the LORD. When someone shuts that door, they cut themselves off from the thing that keeps a life from collapsing. The word “die” here is strong and pointed, describing a ruin that comes from within the person’s own choices rather than from bad luck.

The second half, “In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray,” shows how the process works. Folly tends to feel bigger and more confident the further it goes, not smaller. The person who rejects counsel often becomes more certain of their own path, and that very certainty leads them off the road. The verse does not promise a timeline or a dramatic moment of collapse. It describes a pattern that wisdom literature observes again and again: stubbornness slowly disconnects a person from truth until the damage shows.

What the verse does not say is that every mistake is fatal or that people who make errors are beyond help. Proverbs elsewhere offers repeated invitations to return, learn, and change. Verse 23 is best read as a sober description of where unteachable folly ends, meant to motivate a young person to listen while there is still time.

The Context of Proverbs 5:23

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to train young people in godly living, and chapter 5 focuses on sexual faithfulness and the deceptions that lead men into sin. Verses 20 through 22 describe a man drawn away by an adulteress and then trapped by his own sins, with the “cords” of sin holding him fast. Verse 23 then steps back to name the outcome: a person who will not be instructed is ultimately destroyed by the path he chose.

Reading verse 23 in that setting makes its warning concrete. The “folly” in view is not abstract foolishness but a specific choice to follow appetite instead of wise counsel. The verse also shows that verses 21 and 22 belong together: God sees every path a person takes, and the entanglements of sin are real. Understood this way, Proverbs 5:23 is a diagnosis of a common human pattern rather than a general complaint about people who make mistakes.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:23

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

(WEB)

This verse establishes the fear of the LORD as the beginning of knowledge and names fools who despise instruction. It sets the foundation for understanding why rejecting wisdom leads to ruin.

Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

(WEB)

This verse connects loving discipline with wisdom and contrasts it with hating reproof, showing the same heart issue that Proverbs 5:23 describes from the opposite side.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:23

Lord, you see every path I take, and you know where my own certainty might be leading me. Give me a teachable heart, the kind that listens to wise counsel and welcomes correction without bitterness. Where I have been stubborn or sure of myself, soften me and show me the road I have missed. Keep me from the folly that wanders quietly away from you, and help me choose instruction while there is still time to change course. Amen.
