This list gives you Bible verses to read when you face a choice and do not know which way to go, whether the decision is large or small. These verses share a common thread: they point to God as the source of wisdom, they ask for patience while you wait for clarity, and they trust that the one who made you will guide your steps.

Verses for Asking God for Wisdom

When you are unsure what to do, the first step is often to ask for help rather than trying to settle everything by your own reasoning. These verses invite you to bring your uncertainty directly to God and to expect that he is willing to give what you lack.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

This verse is for the moment you feel stuck and do not know what to do next. Before you weigh the options again, pause and ask God plainly for wisdom, and write down the question you are bringing him so you remember to watch for an answer.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Here the writer contrasts leaning on your own understanding with trusting the Lord with all your heart. Try naming one area of your own reasoning you tend to lean on most, then deliberately entrust that part of the decision to God in prayer before you move forward.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

God promises in this verse to instruct and teach his people in the way they should go, with his eye upon them. Take a short walk or drive without your phone and speak your question aloud, then notice what comes to mind as you keep your eyes open.

Verses for Waiting Patiently on God

Some decisions cannot be rushed, and the pressure to choose quickly can cloud your judgment. These verses speak to the discipline of waiting, reminding you that God’s timing is wise even when it feels slow.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

The psalmist urges waiting on the Lord with courage and a steady heart. When the deadline presses on you, set a specific time each day to be still before God, and let your waiting be an active trust rather than anxious drift.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

This verse links waiting on the Lord with renewed strength. If you feel worn down by a long season of deciding, keep a small daily note of one way God has sustained you so far, which will help you wait without losing heart.

Psalm 62:5

My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls his soul to wait in silence for God alone, since his hope comes from him. Before you talk yourself into a choice, sit quietly for two or three minutes and tell God your hope is in him, not in any single outcome.

Verses for Trusting God With Your Path

Once you have prayed and sought wisdom, the harder task is to act on what you believe God is leading you toward. These verses encourage you to commit your plans to him and to trust that he will direct the outcome.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

This proverb holds together human planning and God’s sovereign direction. Write out your plan clearly, then add a line below it acknowledging that the Lord establishes your steps, so your planning becomes an offering rather than a burden.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

Committing your way to the Lord means handing him the whole path, not just the parts you find comfortable. Choose one concrete step you will take this week and say to God that you are trusting him with where it leads.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God works all things together for good for those who love him, which is a truth for the outcome you cannot yet see. When a choice turns out differently than you hoped, look back over it with God and ask him to show you what he is doing in it.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Paul asks that the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. When you feel torn between two good options, notice which one leaves you with a settled sense of peace, and test that feeling against Scripture and wise counsel.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most directly to your decision on a card or in a note on your phone, and keep it where you will see it, such as beside your bed or on the dashboard. Reading one verse slowly each morning will do more than skimming ten in a rush, so give each passage a few minutes of quiet attention.

Pray the verses back to God in your own words rather than only reading them. Turn a line like Proverbs 3:5-6 into a request, and return to it when anxiety rises. Bring a trusted friend or pastor into the process as well, since wise counsel is one of the ways God often guides his people.

A Short Prayer for Making Decisions

Lord, you see every option in front of me, and you know the end from the beginning. I confess that I often want to decide quickly so I can feel in control. Give me the wisdom I lack, and teach me to wait on you with a steady heart. Quiet my fears, and help me trust that you will direct my steps. Whatever I choose, let it be an act of faith and obedience to you. Amen.
