Mark 5:43 records Jesus giving two instructions right after raising Jairus’s daughter from death: he strictly told the witnesses not to tell anyone what had happened, and he asked that the girl be given something to eat. The verse is spoken by Jesus, who gives the orders to the parents and the disciples in the room where the child lay.

He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

What Mark 5:43 Means

The verse has two parts joined by “and,” and they show different sides of Jesus’ care. The first part, “he strictly ordered them that no one should know this,” is a firm command to silence. The word “strictly” tells you Jesus was serious about it, not offhand. The second part, “commanded that something should be given to her to eat,” is a practical instruction that sounds ordinary, yet it follows a miracle so large that it makes the ordinary moment stand out.

What the verse does not say is why Jesus wanted silence. Mark gives no direct explanation, so readers should be careful not to build a full theory on it. It does not promise that God will always keep miracles private, and it does not teach that food is a sign of spiritual fact. It simply shows Jesus attending to a child who had been dead and was now alive, and wanting her body cared for.

The Context of Mark 5:43

The Gospel of Mark is traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of Peter, and it was likely written for Christians in the Roman world who needed a fast, vivid account of who Jesus was. Mark often shows Jesus issuing commands for secrecy, and scholars have long debated why, sometimes called the “messianic secret.” Whatever the reason, this pattern is common in the book, so the order here fits Mark’s wider portrait rather than standing alone.

The verses just before it, Mark 5:40 to 42, describe Jesus clearing the room, taking the girl by the hand, and telling her to get up. Mark then adds that she walked and that the watchers were amazed. Read in that setting, verse 43 comes as a quiet closing note. The drama of resurrection is followed by the plain needs of a child who has just come back to life.

Key Phrases in Mark 5:43

Mark 5:41

Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha cumi!” which means, being interpreted, “Girl, I tell you, get up!”

(WEB)

This verse shows Jesus taking the girl by the hand and speaking to her directly. Reading it alongside verse 43 helps you see the same tender attention at work, first in the moment of restoration and then in the practical care that follows.

Matthew 25:35

For I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in.

Here Jesus teaches that caring for the hungry is a way of serving him. Set beside Mark 5:43, it helps you understand why feeding a restored child matters as much as the miracle itself.

A Short Prayer From Mark 5:43

Lord Jesus, you spoke to the frightened family and the amazed witnesses with care and authority. Help me to honor your work in my life with humility, sharing what I should and guarding what is not mine to tell. Teach me to notice the ordinary needs of the people and bodies you have given me, and to tend them with the same gentleness you showed the child. Give me a grateful heart that rests in your power and your tenderness. Amen.
