BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses to turn to when you need strength, whether you are running on empty, facing something you did not expect, or simply feel too tired to keep going. It is written for ordinary Christians who want a steady word they can hold onto in the middle of a real day. The verses below share one thread: strength in Scripture is rarely described as something we manufacture. It is something God gives, and often it comes in the moment we admit we have none left.

Verses for the Morning You Are Already Tired

Some days the weariness shows up before your feet touch the floor. These verses speak to that early heaviness, reminding you that the God who made the morning is not drained by it and does not expect you to meet it on your own.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks to people who have run out of energy, promising that God gives power to the faint. Try reading this before you check your phone. Name one task that feels impossible today, then ask God for the next small step rather than the whole mountain.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This verse comes from a book full of grief, yet it stops to notice that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. If you wake up discouraged, write the words “new every morning” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it while you make coffee.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits his flesh and heart are failing, then points to God as the strength of his heart. When your body or your spirit feels spent, try naming one thing you are relying on that will eventually fail, and then turn that reliance toward God.

Verses for a Day That Asks Too Much

Work, caregiving, school runs and unexpected demands can stack up until strength feels like a luxury. These verses address the pressure of a crowded schedule and the temptation to believe everything depends on your effort alone.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this from prison, which gives the verse a grounded weight. Before a demanding meeting or task, say the verse slowly and then ask yourself which specific thing you are trying to do in your own power. Let that one thing go to God in prayer.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul heard God say that His grace is enough and that power is made perfect in weakness. When your limits are showing, resist the urge to hide them. Tell one trusted person honestly where you are struggling today, and let their support be part of God’s provision.

Ephesians 3:16-17

16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love…

(WEB)

Paul prays that believers would be strengthened in their inner being through the Spirit. Strength here is an inward work as much as an outward one. Pause at midday for two minutes of quiet, asking the Spirit to steady your thoughts before you return to the day’s tasks.

Verses for When Your Heart Feels Weak

Sometimes the struggle is not with the calendar but with fear, grief or discouragement that settles deep in the chest. These verses speak to the inner ache and to God’s nearness in it.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names the Lord as his light and salvation, and asks who he should fear. When anxiety rises, try speaking the verse aloud and then listing one fear by name. Naming it in the light of God’s presence often shrinks it to a size you can carry.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

These verses describe God as a refuge and strength who is present even when the earth seems to shake. If the news or a difficult situation has you unsettled, step away from screens for ten minutes and read these verses slowly, letting the image of steadiness sink in.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God tells Israel not to fear because He is with them and will strengthen and help them. When you feel alone with a problem, write this verse in the front of a notebook and return to it whenever loneliness creeps back into your day.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous before a frightening task. Courage in this verse is tied to God’s presence rather than to a feeling. Before you step into a conversation or decision you dread, speak the verse as a short prayer and then take the first step.

Verses for Facing a Long Season

Some strength is needed not for a single day but for months of illness, waiting, grief or hard work. These verses speak to endurance, the kind that is built slowly over time.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Paul traces a path from suffering to endurance to character to hope, rooted in the love of God poured into our hearts. When a season feels endless, try writing down one way you have seen endurance grow in your life, however small.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, because a harvest will come in due time. If you are tired of doing the right thing with little visible result, mark a date on the calendar a few weeks ahead and decide to keep going until then.

Psalm 31:24

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.

(WEB)

David urges his readers to be strong and let their hearts take courage, because the Lord strengthens those who wait on Him. Waiting is active in this verse, not passive. Pick one small faithful action you can do this week while you wait for God to move.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list that speak most directly to your current season, and write them on a card you can keep in a wallet, car visor or phone case. Reading a short verse several times a day, especially at transitions like waking, leaving for work and going to bed, will do more than a single long reading once a week.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn “I can do all things through Christ” into “Lord, I cannot do this today, but I trust You to strengthen me for the next hour.” Speaking Scripture back to God in your own words helps the truth move from your eyes to your heart, especially on the days when you feel least like praying at all.

A Short Prayer for When You Need Strength

Lord, I come to You with less strength than I wish I had. My body is tired, my thoughts are crowded, and some part of me feels like it is running on fumes. Thank You that You do not grow weary, and that You give power to those who are faint. Renew my strength this day in the small things and the hard things alike. Steady my heart when fear rises, and remind me that Your presence goes with me wherever I go. Help me take the next step, and trust You with the ones after that. Amen.
