BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about finding rest for the times when your mind won’t slow down, your body is worn out, or your soul feels restless. It is written for anyone who wants a short, steady set of passages to return to rather than a long reading plan. The verses come from both Testaments and speak to rest in different ways: as God’s invitation, as a gift built into the rhythm of creation, and as a peace that holds steady when circumstances do not change.

Verses for the Weight You Carry

Some seasons leave you carrying more than you can lift alone, whether that is grief, money worries, or the slow fatigue of caring for someone else. The passages in this section name that weight directly and point toward the one who offers to take it.

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 (WEB)

Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus speaks these words to people who are tired and burdened, which describes most of us most weeks. When you feel the day pressing on your shoulders, try naming one specific burden out loud and then deliberately setting it down in prayer, as if handing it across a table.

1 My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress— I will never be greatly shaken.

Psalm 62:1-2 (WEB)

Psalm 62:1-2

The psalmist does not describe rest as a feeling that arrives on its own. He chooses to wait quietly and to rely on God as a fixed place to stand. Before you reach for your phone in the morning, take one slow minute to say a sentence like “God, you are my rock today” and notice how that changes the first hour.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

Psalm 127:2 (WEB)

Psalm 127:2

This verse reminds you that anxious striving does not earn God’s care, and that he gives good things even to those who sleep. If you have been working late out of fear that everything depends on you, consider setting a firm stopping time tonight and letting the unfinished tasks wait until morning.

Verses for the Quiet You Keep Losing

Rest is not only physical. Many people lose their inner stillness in a constant stream of noise, deadlines and opinions. The verses in this section point toward a quieter center that God invites you back into again and again.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46:10 (WEB)

Psalm 46:10

The command to be still is given in the middle of a world that is shaking, which makes it more useful than a gentle suggestion. Try using this verse as a phone-free pause of sixty seconds before you open your inbox, breathing slowly while you repeat the first phrase.

For thus said the Lord the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, “You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence.” You refused…

Isaiah 30:15 (WEB)

Isaiah 30:15

Isaiah contrasts quietness and trust with frantic activity, and he says the quieter path is the one that brings strength. When you feel pulled toward a rushed fix for a problem, pause and ask whether you have first asked God what he would have you do.

He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Mark 6:31 (WEB)

Mark 6:31

Jesus notices that his disciples have had no time even to eat, and he takes them away to rest. This is a reminder that rest is something Jesus himself prioritizes for the people who follow him. Put one unhurried meal or walk on your calendar this week and treat it as an appointment you keep.

Verses for the Hours You Cannot Sleep

Night can bring racing thoughts, regrets, and fears that feel larger in the dark. These passages speak to the person lying awake, reminding you that God keeps watch when you cannot.

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Psalm 4:8 (WEB)

Psalm 4:8

David speaks of lying down and sleeping in peace because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. If your mind starts to spin at bedtime, try speaking this verse slowly into the dark, then name one thing you are trusting God with before you close your eyes.

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

Psalm 3:5 (WEB)

Psalm 3:5

David says he lies down, sleeps, and wakes again because the Lord sustains him, even while enemies surround him. When you wake at three in the morning, try saying this verse once, then return to a short prayer rather than replaying the worst scenarios.

Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and chasing after wind.

Ecclesiastes 4:6 (WEB)

Ecclesiastes 4:6

The Teacher observes that a handful of quiet is better than two handfuls of toil and striving. It is a sober reminder that more effort is not always the answer. Choose one thing on your list this week that you can release, and let that be a small act of rest.

How to Use These Verses

Writing a few of these verses on an index card and keeping it in your wallet or by your bed can make them available in the moments you need them most. Some people choose one verse each week and read it at the start of the day, then return to it in the evening to see what has stayed with them. Reading the verse slowly, perhaps twice, often helps more than rushing through several.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn a phrase into a request, such as “Lord, help me come to you with my burden,” and let the passage shape your words. When you feel rest return even briefly, thank God for it specifically, since gratitude tends to keep the peace from slipping away as quickly.

A Short Prayer for Finding Rest

Lord, you know how tired I am, and you know the thoughts that keep me awake at night. I bring you the weight I have been carrying and ask you to take what I cannot hold any longer. Quiet the noise inside me, and help me trust that you are at work even when I cannot see it. Teach me to receive the rest you offer rather than trying to earn it. Thank you for being faithful when I am not. Amen.
