Proverbs 2:14 warns against people who enjoy doing wrong and take pleasure in twisted, dishonest behavior. The verse is a description of a certain kind of person, one whose gladness comes from evil instead of from what is good and right. It is spoken by a father to his son in the opening chapters of the book of Proverbs, where the wise teacher urges the young man to pursue wisdom and to keep away from those who would lead him astray.

What Proverbs 2:14 Means

The verse begins with people who “rejoice to do evil.” The word rejoice points to joy, not mere weakness or accident. These are people who feel happy when they have done something wrong, who treat wrongdoing as a source of satisfaction. The verse is not describing someone who stumbles into sin and feels regret. It describes a settled pleasure in harm.

The second half says they “delight in the perverseness of evil.” Perverseness here means crookedness, a bending away from what is straight and honest. The writer pictures evil as something twisted, and these people enjoy the twist itself. They are drawn to the deceptive, the underhanded, and the cruel, and they find it appealing for its own sake.

The verse does not promise anything directly to the reader. It is a warning and a portrait. It helps you recognize a kind of character so that you will not be drawn into its company or adopt its values. It does not claim that every person who has done wrong is beyond hope, only that this particular attitude of taking pleasure in evil is dangerous and worth avoiding.

The Context of Proverbs 2:14

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, traditionally attributed to Solomon and gathered for the instruction of the young. Chapter 2 is a long appeal in which a parent or teacher urges a son to seek wisdom as though it were hidden treasure. The surrounding verses, from 11 through 17, describe the protection that discretion and understanding will give. Verse 12 speaks of being delivered from the way of evil and from people who speak perverse things, and verse 13 names those who abandon the upright path for the ways of darkness.

Read in that setting, verse 14 is one piece of a warning about companions. The following verses turn to a seductive and unfaithful woman, which shows that the danger the teacher has in mind is the pull of bad company and false paths in general. Seen this way, verse 14 is not an isolated curse on sinners. It is part of a guided lesson about recognizing who to trust and who to avoid, so the reader can keep to the path of wisdom.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 2:14

Proverbs 1:10

My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

(WEB)

This verse opens the same theme of resisting those who try to lure others into wrongdoing. It shows the same father-to-son warning at the start of the book and helps you see that Proverbs 2:14 is part of a steady, repeated concern about choosing companions wisely.

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers…

(WEB)

Psalm 1 describes the blessed person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or sit in the seat of scoffers. Read alongside Proverbs 2:14, it paints a clear picture of how to avoid the kind of company that delights in evil and instead stay rooted in what is good.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 2:14

Lord, you see the crooked paths that tempt us and the people who find pleasure in leading others astray. Give us a clear sense of what is straight and true, so that we do not take delight in what harms us or those around us. Keep our hearts from cheering for evil, and draw our joy toward what is honest, kind, and good. Help us choose companions who strengthen our faith and to walk away from those who would pull us off the right path. Amen.
