BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

First Corinthians 6:19 teaches that the Christian’s body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives, so it belongs to God and not to us to use as we please. Paul wrote this to the believers in Corinth, a busy port city where sexual sin and the excuses for it were common.

Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own…

What 1 Corinthians 6:19 Means

Paul begins with a question that assumes the answer should be obvious: “Don’t you know?” He is reminding his readers of something they were taught when they first believed. The word “temple” would have caught their attention. In the Jewish world of Paul’s day, the temple in Jerusalem was the one place where God’s presence was specially met with his people. Paul says that now, for every believer, the Holy Spirit makes the body itself that kind of dwelling place.

The phrase “whom you have from God” tells us the Spirit is a gift, not something we earned or produced. Then Paul says “you are not your own.” That sentence is the heart of the verse. Ownership has shifted. The verse does not promise that life will be easy or that every struggle will disappear. It makes a claim about whose we are, and that claim shapes how we treat our bodies, our desires and our choices.

The Context of 1 Corinthians 6:19

First Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to a church he had founded in Corinth, a city known for commerce, wealth and a loose moral reputation. The letter addresses a range of problems that had come up in the congregation, including quarrels among believers, lawsuits between members and confusion about sexuality and marriage. Paul’s argument in chapter 6 is that the body matters because it belongs to the Lord, who will raise it up.

The verses just before this one, at 6:16 to 6:18, warn against joining oneself to sexual immorality, and Paul says that such sin is in a unique way against one’s own body. Verse 19 deepens that warning by showing the body’s dignity. Verse 20 then draws the conclusion: because believers were bought at a price, they should glorify God in their bodies. Read in this setting, verse 19 is not a stand-alone thought about personal worth. It is the foundation for a call to holy living.

Key Phrases in 1 Corinthians 6:19

Romans 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices to God. This echoes the idea in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that the body belongs to God, and it shows that the response to that ownership is worship lived out in daily life.

1 Corinthians 6:20

For you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

(WEB)

The verse right after our passage gives the reason for the call: believers were bought at a price. It completes the thought, showing that God’s claim on us rests on the costly redemption he has made, not on any demand that seeks to crush us.

A Short Prayer From 1 Corinthians 6:19

Lord, thank you that my body is not a place of shame but a dwelling for your Holy Spirit. Help me remember that I am not my own, and let that truth shape my choices this week, in what I watch, eat, rest in and say. Where I have treated my body carelessly or hidden parts of myself from you, bring those things into the light and heal them. Thank you that I belong to you and that you care for me completely. Amen.
