Mark 6:9 tells Jesus’s disciples to wear sandals and to take only one tunic when they go out on their first mission. The point is to travel light and depend on God and on the people they serve, rather than carrying extra possessions for security. Jesus speaks these words to the twelve disciples just before He sends them out two by two to preach and heal.

But to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.

What Mark 6:9 Means

The verse is a continuation of Jesus’s instructions in verse 8, where He tells the twelve to take nothing for the road except a staff. Sandals were the basic footwear for walking long distances on dirt roads, so Jesus permits them to wear what is needed for the journey. The second clause, “and not put on two tunics,” means they should not pack a spare outer garment. A tunic was worn next to the body, and a second one was a sign of comfort and extra provision.

What the verse does not promise is a life of hardship for its own sake. Jesus is not forbidding ordinary clothing or teaching that poverty is holy. He is asking the disciples to set aside the habit of preparing for every possible need on their own. Their safety and supply would come through the hospitality of the households they visited and through the Father who sent them.

The Context of Mark 6:9

The Gospel of Mark is traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of Peter, and it was likely written for a Christian community facing hardship and persecution. It is the shortest of the four Gospels and moves quickly from one scene to the next, showing Jesus as the active Son of God who acts with authority. The commissioning of the twelve in chapter 6 marks a turning point, as Jesus begins to share His ministry with those He has called.

Just before this passage, Jesus is rejected in His hometown because of the people’s unbelief, and in verse 7 He gives the twelve authority over unclean spirits. Read this way, the instruction to travel light is not a hardship rule but a lesson in trust. The disciples are going out with Christ’s authority, and they are meant to rely on that authority rather than on their own resources.

Key Phrases in Mark 6:9

Matthew 6:33

But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

(WEB)

This verse teaches that when your first priority is God’s kingdom, your daily needs will be addressed. It echoes the disciples’ call to trust God for provision rather than storing up resources for themselves.

Philippians 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul assures the Philippian church that God will supply all their needs according to His riches. It shows the same confidence that Jesus wanted His disciples to have as they traveled with only the basics.

A Short Prayer From Mark 6:9

Lord Jesus, You sent Your first disciples out with little more than the basics and taught them to trust You for what they needed. Help me to hold my possessions and plans with open hands. When fear tempts me to gather extra security, remind me that You are faithful to provide. Give me courage to step out in service with the resources You have already given me, and teach me to rest in Your care for each day. Amen.
