BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This prayer is for the start of a new week, when the calendar fills up before you have finished your coffee and a list of demands is already waiting. You can pray it on Sunday evening as you look ahead, first thing Monday morning, or whenever a fresh week feels like too much to face. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your concerns differ.

Prayer for a New Week

Lord, another week is opening in front of me, and I can feel the weight of it before the first day has even started. There are meetings I am dreading, deadlines that are already tight, and conversations I have been putting off. There are people I love who are struggling, and I do not know how to help them all. Some of this I can see clearly, and some of it I can only guess at. Give me the sense to know what matters most and the courage to let the rest go.

Father, I ask you to go before me into every day of this week. Steady my mind when it races ahead to what might go wrong. Give me patience with the people I work with and live with, especially on the days when I am tired and short-tempered. Help me to do my work honestly and well, without needing to prove my worth through it. Keep my hands open to receive what you give and to set down what you never asked me to carry.

Thank you that this week does not belong to my own strength alone. You were faithful in the week that just ended, and you will be faithful in the one that is beginning. Meet me when I fail, forgive me when I forget you, and remind me that each new morning is a gift from you. Teach me to trust you one day at a time, and let me rest in your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this week is in your hands before it is in mine. Go ahead of me into the morning, the meetings, and the hard moments I can already sense coming. Steady my heart when I feel rushed, help me to be patient with the people around me, and show me what to set down. I trust you with the days ahead, one at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you wake up on Monday and feel that yesterday’s energy is gone. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to renew your strength for the day in front of you.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Use this verse when the week’s worries feel too heavy to carry. Name each burden you are holding, then hand it over to the Lord and ask him to sustain you through it.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for the weary parts of your week, the long shifts and draining responsibilities. Ask God to renew your strength so that you can keep going without losing heart.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape how you plan your week. Ask God to teach you to use your days wisely, so that you spend your time on what truly matters to him and to the people you love.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Pray this when your mind keeps running ahead to next Thursday or next month. Ask Jesus to help you take each day as it comes, trusting that today has enough trouble of its own.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer on Monday morning, sitting at the kitchen table or in the car before the day begins. Keep a pen and paper nearby so you can write down the two or three concerns that come to mind most strongly. When you finish, look at the list and speak a short sentence of trust over each item, asking God to carry it with you through the week.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a small group that meets on Sunday evenings. Take turns reading a paragraph each, then pause for a moment of silence before you close. Praying together can remind you that you are not facing the week alone, and it gives others a chance to pray for the specific pressures you are bringing to God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every day of this new week, and may his peace guard your heart and your mind. May he give you patience for the hard conversations, clarity for the difficult choices, and rest when your work is finished. May you walk in his strength and know his faithfulness with you at every turn.
