BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Romans 1:17 says that the good news about Jesus shows God’s righteousness, and that this righteousness is received through faith, from start to finish. The verse also quotes the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk to say that the righteous person will live by faith. Paul, a Jewish believer and apostle, wrote it in his letter to the Christians in Rome, a mixed community of Jews and Gentiles.

For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

What Romans 1:17 Means

The phrase “God’s righteousness” refers to God’s own faithfulness to his promises and his right way of setting people in a correct relationship with himself. Paul says this righteousness is “revealed” in the gospel, meaning it has been made plain and visible in what God has done through Christ. It is not something people manufacture by their own effort.

The words “from faith to faith” are debated, but most readers take them to mean that righteousness is received through faith and remains a matter of faith from beginning to end. The verse does not promise a life free of trouble. It says the one who is right with God will live, and that this life is sustained by trusting God rather than by proving oneself.

Paul then quotes Habakkuk 2:4, which was spoken to a people facing danger and uncertainty. The point is that trust in God has always been the way of life for his faithful people, and the gospel brings that same principle into full view.

The Context of Romans 1:17

Romans was written by Paul, traditionally dated to around the mid-50s AD, probably from Corinth. He had not yet visited the church in Rome, and in the opening chapter he explains his eagerness to preach there and his confidence in the gospel. Verses 14 to 16 set up the theme: he is in debt to all people, and he is not ashamed of a message that brings God’s power to save everyone who believes.

Just after verse 17, Paul turns to God’s wrath against human unrighteousness (verses 18 to 20). That contrast matters. Verse 17 shows that God’s righteousness is given as a gift through faith, while verses 18 onward describe the sin that makes that gift necessary. Read in this setting, the verse is the hinge of the argument, not a standalone motto.

Key Phrases in Romans 1:17

Habakkuk 2:4

Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.

This is the Old Testament passage Paul quotes. Reading it in its original setting shows that living by faith was never a new idea, and that God’s people have always been called to trust him in hard times.

Romans 3:21-22

21 But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets; 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction…

Here Paul expands on the same theme, explaining that God’s righteousness has been made known apart from the law and comes through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

A Short Prayer From Romans 1:17

Lord, you are faithful, and your righteousness is revealed in the good news of Jesus. I confess that I often try to make myself acceptable to you by my own effort, and I grow tired when I fail. Teach me to receive your righteousness by faith each day. Help me to trust your promises when my plans fall apart and to live from the security of who you are. Amen.
