Proverbs 3:27 tells you not to hold back good from people who are owed it when you are able to give it. The verse is about timing and generosity: if you have the means to help right now, do not delay or refuse. It is one of the wisdom sayings in the book of Proverbs, traditionally attributed to Solomon, and it speaks to a parent or teacher’s voice addressing a young person who is learning how to live well before God.

Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.

What Proverbs 3:27 Means

The verse begins with a prohibition: “don’t withhold.” To withhold is to keep back something that belongs in someone else’s hands. The object is “good,” which in this context means a kindness, a payment, a fair share, or help of some kind. The phrase “to those to whom it is due” matters, because it assumes the good is owed. This is not about charity to strangers alone. It covers wages a worker has earned, a debt that has come due, or care a person has a claim to.

The final clause sets the boundary: “when it is in the power of your hand to do it.” The verse does not ask you to give what you do not have or to ruin yourself. It asks you to act when the ability is already in front of you. The moment of opportunity is the moment of responsibility.

The verse does not promise that generosity will bring you wealth or that a grateful recipient will repay you. It describes what is right and wise to do, and leaves the outcome to God. Wisdom in Proverbs is practical, grounded in how a just and faithful person behaves.

The Context of Proverbs 3:27

Proverbs 3 is a set of instructions from a father to his son, urging him to trust the LORD, honor him with his possessions, and walk in integrity. The surrounding verses (3:24-30) describe the calm that comes from living rightly: you can sleep without fear because God is your confidence. Verse 27 sits in a short run of commands about how to treat your neighbor, and each one names a way to avoid harming people nearby.

Read in that setting, the verse is less a stand-alone rule about money and more part of a pattern. Verse 28 warns against promising help tomorrow when you can help today. Verse 29 warns against plotting harm against someone who trusts you. Verse 30 warns against quarrels started without cause. Verse 27 belongs to this family: do not let your own hand sit idle when another person’s need is real and your ability is present.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 3:27

Deuteronomy 15:7

If a poor man, one of your brothers, is with you within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother…

(WEB)

This verse commands Israel not to harden their hearts or shut their hands against a poor brother. It shows the same principle from the Law: when you have the means, do not turn away from a person in need.

Galatians 6:10

So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers to do good to everyone whenever they have the opportunity, especially to those in the household of faith. The phrase “as we have opportunity” echoes the timing that Proverbs 3:27 emphasizes.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 3:27

Lord, you have given me more than I need in many areas of my life. Show me where I have been holding back what is owed to others, whether it is money, time, encouragement, or simple fairness. When the ability is in my hands, help me act without delay and without excuses. Give me a generous heart that trusts you to provide for me as I provide for others. Amen.
