These prayers are for veterans, the men and women who served in uniform and carry that service with them long after they come home. You can pray them on Veterans Day, on Memorial Day, on an anniversary that is hard to name, or on an ordinary morning when someone you love is struggling with what they saw and did. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Prayers for Veterans

Father, we come to You on behalf of those who have worn the uniform and given years of their lives to protect others. Some of them still wake at night hearing sounds from far away. Some carry injuries that others cannot see, in their bodies, their memories, or their sleep. Be near to each one. Steady their breathing when the past rises up, and give them people who will sit with them without needing them to explain everything.

Lord, bring provision where there is need: good care for wounded bodies and minds, work that gives dignity, a roof that feels like home, and food on the table for their families. Heal the broken places between spouses, parents, and children, and soften the silence that grows when no one knows what to say. Where pride or shame keeps a veteran from asking for help, give them courage to reach out, and let them find a listening ear. Remind them that they were never only what they did in the service, but beloved children of God with a future still ahead.

We also remember those who did not come home, and the families who still set a place for them in their hearts. Comfort them with Your nearness, and let their sacrifice be honored with truth and gratitude. Guard those who serve now and those who will serve after them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up the veterans I know, and the ones I will never meet. Be close to those who are hurting in body or mind, and give them rest tonight. Bring help where it is needed and people who will listen well. Hold the families who love them and carry the weight with them. Thank You for their service and their courage. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this for the veteran whose heart feels crushed by memories or losses. Ask God to draw near in the exact places where the pain runs deepest, and to rescue the spirit that feels worn down.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the veteran who has been through danger and still feels unsafe. Thank God for being a refuge that does not depend on circumstances, and ask Him to help them rest in that shelter.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this over a veteran facing fear, uncertainty, or a long recovery. Ask the Lord to remind them that He is with them in each hard step, and to give them strength for the day in front of them.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this invitation before God for those who are exhausted from carrying too much for too long. Pray that they would come to Jesus honestly, with their burdens, and find rest that goes deeper than sleep.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this for the families, friends, and community members who walk alongside veterans. Ask God to give them patience, wisdom, and generosity, so that the weight is shared and no one carries it alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for veterans in the early morning or late at night, when the house is quiet and memories tend to surface. Sit in a chair you find comfortable, keep a cup of tea or coffee nearby, and read the main prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let God bring specific names and faces to mind. If you have a photo of a veteran in your life, or a flag, a medal, or a dog tag, you might hold it in your hands while you pray.

You can also pray this together with others, such as a small group, a church family, or a spouse or child who wants to support someone who served. Invite each person to add a sentence about someone they are thinking of. If you know a veteran personally, consider asking them if there is a specific need they would like you to bring before God, and then pray it plainly and faithfully.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every sacrifice keep those who served and those who love them. May He bring peace to restless nights, healing to tender places, and friends who stay close. May His face shine upon them and His grace go with them into every new day.
