John 17:3 defines eternal life as knowing God, the only true God, and knowing Jesus Christ whom he sent. In other words, eternal life is not mainly a future reward measured in time; it is a relationship with the Father and the Son that begins now. Jesus speaks these words in prayer, near the end of his time with his disciples, addressing his Father directly.

This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

What John 17:3 Means

The phrase “this is eternal life” is a definition. Jesus is not describing the length of life after death but explaining what eternal life actually consists of. The key word is “know,” which in Scripture means personal, intimate acquaintance, the kind you have with someone you love and trust, not merely knowing facts about them. Eternal life, then, is being in a living relationship with God.

The verse names two objects of that knowing: “the only true God” and “Jesus Christ, whom you sent.” They are held together in one act of knowledge. The verse does not promise that knowing God will remove every hardship, answer every question, or guarantee a comfortable life. It describes the deepest reality of the believer’s life with God, and it leaves room for struggle, growth and waiting.

The Context of John 17:3

John 17 belongs to the Gospel of John, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who wrote for a community that needed to understand who Jesus was and what he gave. Chapter 17 is often called the High Priestly Prayer because Jesus prays for himself, for his disciples, and for all who will believe through their message. The setting is the night before his crucifixion, which gives the prayer a weight of farewell and entrustment.

Just before verse 3, Jesus says the Father gave him authority over all flesh so that he might give eternal life to those the Father has given him. Verse 3 explains that gift. Just after it, Jesus says he has glorified the Father on earth and completed the work given him. Read this way, knowing God is not a separate project from Christ’s work; it is the very life that his work makes available.

Key Phrases in John 17:3

1 John 5:20

We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

This verse echoes John 17:3 closely, affirming that Christ has given us understanding to know the true God, and that we are in him who is true. It shows the same pairing of the Father and the Son as the one truly known.

Jeremiah 9:24

But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth; for I delight in these things,” says the LORD.

Jeremiah points to knowing God as the highest thing a person can boast in, which matches Jesus’ view that knowing God is the heart of eternal life. It frames knowledge of God as humble, grounded in his steadfast love and justice.

A Short Prayer From John 17:3

Father, you alone are the true God, and I want to know you, not just know about you. Thank you for sending Jesus Christ, who makes you known to me and brings me into your life. Teach me to listen to your word, to trust your character when I cannot see the way ahead, and to walk daily in the relationship you have opened to me. Let knowing you shape the way I speak, work and love today. Amen.
