John 7:2 tells us that a major Jewish festival, the Feast of Booths, was approaching. Its plain meaning is simply a note about the calendar, but in John’s Gospel that calendar detail sets up a tense moment in Jesus’ ministry. The narrator, John, is the speaker here, writing to readers in the late first century, and the verse introduces a conversation that follows between Jesus and his own brothers.

Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was at hand.

What John 7:2 Means

The phrase “the feast of the Jews” refers to a set-apart time of worship that Israel observed each year in the autumn. The Feast of Booths, also called Sukkot, was one of the three pilgrimage festivals when Jewish men were expected to gather in Jerusalem. It recalled the years Israel spent living in temporary shelters after the exodus from Egypt, and it also marked the harvest. The word “booths” points to the small huts families built from branches, which they lived in for about a week.

The words “was at hand” mean the festival was close, not yet arrived. John is pointing forward. The verse does not promise anything directly about Jesus or his followers. What it does is mark a turning point in the story by placing the events of the next several chapters against a known religious season, one that would draw crowds and heighten tension in Jerusalem.

The Context of John 7:2

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing in him brings life. The author presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the feasts and symbols of Israel’s worship, so a festival reference like this one carries more weight than it might in a simple chronicle. Readers who knew the Jewish calendar would have understood the stakes right away.

The verses just before this one explain that Jesus had been staying in Galilee because people in Judea were seeking to kill him. Verses 3 to 5 then show his brothers urging him to travel to Judea for the feast so his disciples could see his works, and John adds that even his brothers did not yet believe in him. Read with that setting, the calendar note becomes the pressure point: Jerusalem is about to fill with people, and the question of whether and when Jesus will go up becomes urgent.

Key Phrases in John 7:2

Leviticus 23:34

“Speak to the children of Israel, and say, ‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of tents for seven days to the LORD.

This verse gives the original command to observe the Feast of Booths in the seventh month. Reading it alongside John 7:2 shows that John’s readers would have understood the festival as a divinely appointed time of remembrance.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…

This verse affirms that there is a set time for everything under heaven. It helps you see John 7:2 as part of a larger pattern in which God works through seasons and appointed moments.

A Short Prayer From John 7:2

Father, you know the times and seasons of every part of my life, and you knew the moment when Jesus would go up to the feast. Help me to notice the sacred calendar you have given me, the days of rest, worship, and remembrance that anchor my faith. When others press me to hurry or to act before I am ready, give me patience to wait on your timing. Teach me to trust that you are working even in the seasons I cannot yet see. Amen.
