Mark 9:23 means that what God can do depends on trust in him, and that the person who trusts him has access to what seems impossible. Jesus speaks these words to a desperate father whose son has been tormented by an evil spirit since childhood. The father has asked Jesus to help if he can, and Jesus turns the question back on the matter of belief.

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

What Mark 9:23 Means

Jesus begins with the word “if,” and he does so on purpose. The father has said “if you can do anything,” and Jesus answers with a condition of his own: “If you can believe.” The question is not whether Jesus has the power to heal. It is whether the father is willing to trust that power, and so the weight of the statement falls on the man’s response rather than on Jesus’ ability.

The phrase “all things are possible” is broad, and it should be read in the setting of the story. It does not mean that a believer can demand any outcome he likes or that prayer works like a vending machine. It means that faith opens the way for God to act, and that nothing in the reach of God’s power is too hard for him. The verse points to God’s power as the source of possibility, and to faith as the open hand that receives it.

The Context of Mark 9:23

Mark’s Gospel is the shortest of the four accounts and was likely written for a Gentile audience, probably in Rome, with a fast and vivid style that presents Jesus as the powerful Son of God who acts with urgency. Mark is traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of Peter. The story of the boy with the evil spirit comes right after the Transfiguration, when Jesus returns from the mountain to find his disciples unable to cast out the spirit. Their failure is what sets up this exchange.

Read in that light, the verse is not a general lesson about positive thinking. It is part of a scene about the disciples’ weakness and the father’s struggle. Jesus is correcting the notion that the power to heal belongs to people by their own skill or status. Faith, in this account, is a dependence on God rather than a confidence in oneself, and the father’s honest plea that follows shows what that dependence looks like.

Key Phrases in Mark 9:23

Matthew 17:20

He said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

This parallel account of the same event, in Matthew’s Gospel, adds Jesus’ explanation to the disciples about why they could not cast out the spirit. It highlights that even a small measure of faith placed in God can accomplish what seems impossible, which deepens the theme of Mark 9:23.

Mark 11:24

Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.

Here Jesus speaks again about prayer and belief, encouraging his followers to trust that they have received what they ask. Reading it alongside Mark 9:23 helps you see that faith in prayer is tied to confidence in God’s character and willingness to act.

A Short Prayer From Mark 9:23

Lord, I bring you the places where I feel weak and uncertain. Some of my prayers feel small, and some of my hope feels thin. Help me to trust you more than I trust my own strength or my own understanding. Where I doubt, meet me with grace, and where I feel stuck, show me what your power can do. I believe you are able to act, and I give you the things that seem impossible to me. Amen.
