In this lesson, children learn that they can trust God with all their heart, even when they don’t understand everything. This lesson is for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is trustworthy. When we trust Him instead of only doing things our own way, He helps us walk the right path.
Memory Verse
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
(WEB)
Put both hands on your heart, then lift them up like you are giving something to someone. Say the verse slowly, pressing your hands on your heart for “all your heart,” and open your hands on “don’t lean on your own understanding.”
The Story: Proverbs 3 for Kids
King Solomon was a wise king of Israel, and he wrote many short sayings to help people live well. In this chapter, he speaks to his son like a loving father. He says, “My son, don’t forget what I have taught you.” Solomon wants his son to remember that good things come from listening to God and doing what is right.
Solomon tells his son that kindness and truth are treasures. He says, “Tie them around your neck and write them on your heart.” That means the child should keep these good things close, like a necklace they never take off. When we are kind and truthful, we find favor with God and with other people.
Then Solomon gives a very important rule. He says, “Trust the Lord with all your heart. Don’t lean only on your own understanding.” Our ideas are small, but God sees everything. When we ask Him to lead us, He makes our paths straight, even when the road is hard to see.
Solomon also talks about being humble. He says, “Don’t think you are wise in your own eyes.” Instead, we should respect God and turn away from doing wrong. Solomon teaches that when we honor God, He blesses us. He even says that God gives grace to people who are humble.
Near the end of the chapter, Solomon says that wisdom is more valuable than silver or gold. Wisdom is like a tree of life, and it brings peace to those who hold on to it. He reminds us that God made the earth and the heavens by His wisdom. So when we walk with wisdom, we can sleep peacefully at night, knowing God is watching over us.
Read It Together
Proverbs 3:3-4
3 Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor, and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
(WEB)
Point out how the verse says to keep kindness and truth close, like something you wear every day. Ask the children what it looks like to be kind and truthful at school or at home.
Proverbs 3:6
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Show that this verse promises God will make our paths straight when we acknowledge Him. Explain that acknowledging God means thinking about Him and talking with Him in all the things we do during the day.
Proverbs 3:24
When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.
(WEB)
Point out the sweet, peaceful sleep the verse describes. Explain that when we trust God, we can rest without being afraid, because He is always with us.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you can trust God to help you with this week?
- What does it mean to trust God with all your heart?
- Why do you think being kind and truthful is like a necklace we wear every day?
- When have you felt a little bit scared, and how can knowing God is with you help?
- How can we show God that we are not wise in our own eyes but want to listen to Him?
Activity Ideas
Heart Necklace Craft
You will need paper, scissors, crayons, a hole punch, and string or yarn. Have each child draw a large heart on paper and cut it out. Ask them to write the word “Trust” or “Kindness” on the heart. Punch a hole at the top and tie it onto the string so they can wear it or hang it by their bed as a reminder.
Follow the Path Game
Use masking tape to make a winding path across the floor. Blindfold one child, or have them close their eyes, and let another child guide them using only spoken directions. Explain that this is like trusting God when we cannot see the whole path. Switch roles so everyone gets a turn.
Peaceful Sleep Jar
Gather a clean jar, small paper strips, and a pencil. Have each child write one worry on a strip and one thing they trust God to do about it. Fold the strips and place them in the jar. At bedtime, pull out a strip and pray together about it, reminding the family that God gives peaceful sleep.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Proverbs 3 is a call to trust God fully rather than relying only on our own reasoning, plans, or sense of what is right. It joins trust with honesty, humility, generosity, and reverence, showing that real wisdom shapes the whole of life. Solomon’s words invite us to see God’s faithfulness in the everyday choices we make.
When teaching children, be careful not to promise that God will always make life easy or that trusting Him means nothing bad will ever happen. Verse 6 speaks of God making paths straight, and verse 26 speaks of Him being our confidence, but these are about His faithful guidance and presence, not guaranteed outcomes. Keep the focus on God’s character and His steady care.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being wise and good. Help us trust You with all our hearts, even when we do not understand everything. Teach us to be kind and truthful, and to listen to You every day. Thank You for going with us on our path. Amen.
