BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are for Labor Day, the holiday set aside to honor work and the people who do it. You can pray them in the morning before a shift, at a family cookout, or on a quiet afternoon when the weekend feels too short. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and add the names and needs closest to your heart.

Prayers for Labor Day

Lord, thank you for the gift of work. Thank you for the hands that build, the minds that plan, the hours spent caring for children, patients, neighbors, and the people who sit across from us every day. On this day when so many of us are off, help us remember that our labor has value because it is offered to you. Where we are tired, restore us. Where we feel unseen, remind us that you see every task completed in secret.

We also bring to you those who cannot rest today: the nurse on a double shift, the driver on the road, the farmer checking fields, the worker anxious about a job that might disappear. Give them strength for what they carry and wisdom for what lies ahead. Protect those who work in dangerous places, and make our employers and leaders people who treat workers with fairness and mercy. Help us to be grateful for what we have without comparing it to what others have. Teach us to give our effort faithfully, not to earn your love, which is already ours, but to reflect your care to the world. Let the work of our hands bless someone tomorrow. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, on this Labor Day, I thank you for the work you have given me and for the people who share it with me. Give me steady hands and a patient heart. Rest me where I am weary, and remind me that my worth is not measured by my output. Let my work today honor you, and let my rest honor you too. Amen.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel that your work is small or unnoticed. Ask God to help you do each task for him and not only for the approval of others.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your workload feels overwhelming. Ask God to help you give your full effort to what is in front of you today, trusting him with what is not.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the moments when you are exhausted from labor. Bring your weariness to Jesus and ask him to show you where you can rest in him.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you plan your coming week. Ask the Lord to shape your plans and to help you bring your work before him before you begin it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Consider praying the longer prayer early in the day, before the holiday schedule fills up. Sit near a window or somewhere quiet, and keep a cup of coffee or tea in your hands while you speak. If you have a job that requires your hands, like cooking, gardening, or repairing something, you might pray the shorter version while you work with them.

You can also pray these words together with family or friends over a meal. Invite each person to name one piece of work they are thankful for and one burden they are carrying into the coming week. Ask someone to read the prayer aloud, and let the others say a closing amen together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made work holy be near to every worker you love. May he give them rest when they are weary, courage when they are afraid, and joy in the small faithful things they do each day. May they know that their labor is seen, valued, and held in the hands of God.
