When you need guidance, you are looking for a word from God that makes the next step clearer, whether the decision is about work, family, money or a relationship. This list gathers verses that point you to God’s wisdom, promise to lead, and invitation to ask. Together they teach that guidance comes through trusting God’s character and staying close to him in prayer and Scripture.

Verses for the Morning You Are Unsure Which Way to Go

Some decisions arrive with no clear answer and a deadline that will not wait. The verses in this group remind you that God does not leave you to work it out alone, and that he is willing to show you the next step even when the whole road is out of view.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

This passage tells you not to rely only on what you can figure out yourself. Before you sign the lease or accept the offer, write down the two or three options you are weighing and ask God, out loud, to make one of them plainly right or wrong.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Here God speaks in the first person, promising to instruct and teach. Each day, ask him for the next small step rather than the entire plan, and watch for the way he opens or closes doors over the following hours.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James says that anyone who lacks wisdom should ask God, who gives generously without scolding. Keep a short note on your phone titled “Asking” and add to it each time you bring a question to him, so you can look back and see how he answered.

Verses for Choices That Carry Weight

Major decisions about a career move, a marriage, a move across the country or a difficult family matter can feel heavy enough to stop you from deciding at all. These verses speak to the weight of those choices and to the way God keeps his promises through them.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks God to show him his ways and teach him his paths, then waits on God to answer. Before a big choice, pray these words slowly, then spend five minutes writing what you sense God is saying, even if it is only one sentence.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

This verse describes a voice behind you saying, this is the way, walk in it. When you feel pulled in two directions, pause and ask a mature friend or pastor whether the direction you are leaning toward matches what you know of God’s character.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

The verse tells you to commit your way to the Lord and trust him to act. Write your decision on paper, place it under your Bible, and tell God you are handing him the outcome as well as the choice.

Verses for When Your Path Feels Uncertain

Sometimes the guidance you need is less about a single choice and more about walking through a season with no obvious signs at all. These verses encourage steady faithfulness while you wait for clarity to come.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Scripture is described as a lamp for the feet and a light for the path, which means it usually shows you the next few steps rather than the whole route. Read a short passage each morning and let it shape the one decision you face that day.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Waiting on the Lord is presented as a source of renewed strength rather than idle time. When you feel stuck, set aside one quiet period each week that you spend simply waiting in prayer, without trying to force an answer.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in a painful and confusing season, the writer recalls that God’s mercies are new every morning. Begin tomorrow by thanking God for one specific mercy you have seen this week, which keeps your attention on his faithfulness.

Verses for Asking God What Comes Next

When you are not sure what to do next, the simplest form of guidance is a habit of asking, listening and acting in faith. These verses encourage you to bring every question to God and to trust that he hears you.

Jeremiah 33:3

‘Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great and difficult things, which you don’t know.’

(WEB)

God invites his people to call to him and promises to answer and show them great and unsearchable things. Set aside time for a question-and-answer prayer, asking one question at a time and recording any thought, verse or peace that follows.

Matthew 7:7

“Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.

(WEB)

Jesus says to ask, seek and knock, and the door will be opened. Keep asking the same question over several days rather than only once, since persistent prayer often brings clarity through conversations, reading and quiet reflection.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul connects discernment to a renewed mind that tests what God’s will is. Each time you consider a decision, ask whether the choice reflects the values of Christ or the pressure of the moment, and then choose the first.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most to your situation on an index card or in a notes app, and place them where you will see them while making your morning coffee or driving to work. Reading one aloud before you decide anything gives your thoughts a steadier place to start.

When you pray with these verses, use them as the words of your prayer rather than as a checklist. Read the passage, pause on the phrase that catches your attention, and then tell God what you are considering. Afterward, write down what you sense, and revisit the note after a few days to see what has become clearer.

A Short Prayer for when you need guidance

Lord, I come to you because I do not know the way forward on my own. You know the road ahead of me, every turn and every obstacle, and you see what I cannot. Show me the next step, and give me the wisdom to recognize your voice among all the other voices that compete for my attention. Help me to trust you when the answer comes slowly, and to obey when you make the way clear. Thank you for your patience with my questions and for your steady faithfulness. Amen.
