BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This prayer is for the moments when kindness does not come naturally, whether you are tired, provoked, or simply running low on patience with the people around you. It is best prayed in the morning before the day’s demands arrive, or in the middle of a hard conversation when you need a quiet word with God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Kindness

Lord, you have been kind to me far more often than I have deserved. You have been patient with my failures, gentle with my fears, and generous with mercy I did not earn. I come to you today asking that some of that kindness would flow through me to the people I live and work with. Soften the sharp edges of my tongue. Slow my reactions when someone frustrates me, and help me to notice the person behind the irritating email, the rushed cashier, or the child who will not stop asking questions.

Father, I confess that I am often more concerned with being right, finished, or unbothered than with being kind. Show me where my heart has grown cold, and forgive me for the small cruelties I barely notice in myself. Give me eyes to see who is struggling beside me, even when they do not say so. Let my words be a comfort rather than a wound, and let my hands be ready to help before I have time to make excuses. Make my kindness honest, not performed, rooted in your love for me.

Holy Spirit, work patience and warmth into the ordinary places of my day. Where I have been unkind, help me to apologize quickly and mean it. Where I have been unseen, let me be seen by you and strengthened by that knowledge. Teach me to treat others as you have treated me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need your kindness right now, and I need it to pass through me. Soften my heart toward the person in front of me, and slow my tongue before it says something I will regret. Help me see them as you see them, and give me a gentle word or a helping hand in this moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties kindness to the forgiveness God has already given us. Pray this verse when resentment is tempting you, and ask God to let the memory of his mercy shape how you treat the person who has hurt you.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

This verse describes kindness as clothing you put on deliberately each morning. Pray it as you dress for the day, asking God to help you choose compassion before the day begins to test you.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Kindness is listed among the fruit of the Spirit, which means it grows as God works within you rather than being manufactured by effort alone. Pray this passage asking the Spirit to cultivate kindness in places where you feel dry.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

This proverb shows how a gentle answer can change the course of a conflict. Pray it before a difficult phone call or meeting, asking God to guard your words and help you respond softly under pressure.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sets kindness alongside justice and humility as what God requires. Pray this verse when you feel pulled toward harshness, asking God to shape your character so that love for others comes naturally.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version at the kitchen table before the household wakes, or in the car before you walk into a stressful workplace. Keep a pen nearby if you like, and write down one specific person you want to treat with more gentleness that day. Let that name become the focus of your prayer rather than a vague wish for a better mood.

If you are praying for someone who is hard to be kind to, you might read this prayer together with a friend, spouse, or small group who can hold you accountable. Ask them to pray for you in return, and check in later about how the day went. Kindness grows well in community, where others notice when we fall short and gently encourage us to keep going.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has been so kind to you fill your words and actions with his gentleness today. May you see the people around you with fresh eyes, and may your patience be a quiet witness to the God who first loved you. Go in peace, and be kind.
