BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This bedtime prayer is for the moment when the day is over but the fear has not gone to sleep with you. It is written for evenings when you lie awake replaying conversations, dreading tomorrow, or feeling too small for what lies ahead. Pray it quietly before you turn out the light, read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and make it your own.

Bedtime Prayer for Finding Courage

Lord, the day is ending and I am still carrying things I did not expect to carry. There was the call I kept putting off, the meeting where my voice shook, and the quiet worry that I am not as strong as the people around me seem to be. Tonight I bring all of it to you without pretending it is smaller than it is. You already know every word I did not say and every fear I did not name out loud.

Help me set down what I was never meant to hold through the night. Where I have been brave, let me remember that courage came from you and not from my own reserves. Where I have been afraid, let me see that you were present in the room anyway. Give me courage for tomorrow in the small things first: the first hard conversation, the first honest answer, the first step toward what I have been avoiding. Steady my heart so that I do not have to be fearless to be faithful.

Stand guard over my sleep and over the people I love who are also lying awake tonight. Keep the dark from getting the last word. When fear comes back in the early hours, remind me that you have not left my side. I rest in your care and trust you with the morning I cannot yet see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and afraid of what tomorrow asks of me. Give me enough courage for the next step and no more than that. Quiet the worry in my chest and let me rest in your presence. Stay close while I sleep, and wake me with the strength to keep going. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let God speak the command to you personally. Pray that the courage it describes would reach the specific situation weighing on you tonight, so that you can face it with him beside you.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Turn this verse into a prayer by naming what you fear and then declaring the Lord as your light and your stronghold. Let the verse shift your focus from the threat to the one who holds you.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the moments when fear rises in the night. Pray the words honestly and let trust become the answer you return to when your thoughts begin to race.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this promise as a reminder that God’s presence does not depend on how brave you feel. Ask him to make the promise real to you before you fall asleep.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the timid parts of yourself that you think disqualify you from the task ahead. Ask God to fill you with the power, love and self-discipline he has already given you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it at the edge of sleep, once the lights are off and your phone is set aside. Sit or lie in your usual place and speak the words slowly, pausing after each sentence to notice what rises in you. If one line catches on something you are carrying, linger there and say it again in your own words before moving on.

You might keep a pen beside the bed and write one specific fear on a slip of paper, then place it under your Bible or a book. Hold it in your hand while you pray, and tell God you are leaving it with him for the night. A parent, spouse, or close friend could also pray this prayer with you by reading it aloud in turn, which can make the courage feel less like something you must generate alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who goes before you tomorrow also keep watch over you tonight. May his peace settle on your mind, and may courage rise in you one quiet step at a time. Rest well, knowing you are held, and wake to a morning that God has already prepared for you.
