This simple prayer for love is written for the moments when you want to give and receive love more freely but feel stuck, guarded or unsure how to begin. It works well at the start or end of the day, in the quiet before a hard conversation, or whenever you notice resentment or loneliness settling in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Simple Prayer for Love
Father, you are love, and every good way I know to love someone first came from you. I come to you tonight honestly. Some days I give love easily, and other days I hold back because I am tired, hurt or afraid of being let down again. Soften what has hardened in me. Show me where I have been keeping score, and help me set that down at your feet.
Fill my home, my work and my friendships with patience and kindness. Help me notice the people closest to me, the spouse who is worn out, the child who needs a hug, the coworker who is struggling quietly, and give me the words and the actions that show I care. When I fall short, remind me that your mercy is new every morning, and let me receive your grace so I can extend it to others.
Teach me to love the way you love, freely, patiently and without needing to earn it. Let my life be a place where others feel safe and seen. Thank you that I am loved first and most fully by you. Let that truth overflow into how I treat everyone I meet today. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, you love me, and you love the people around me more than I do. Right now I feel tired and a little closed off. Open my heart a crack wider. Help me see the person in front of me the way you see them, and give me one small, loving thing to do or say today. Let your love move through me and out into the world. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time, such as the few minutes after you wake up or just before you fall asleep. Sit somewhere quiet, and hold a cup of tea or rest your hands open on your lap. A physical gesture can help your heart slow down and focus. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle.
If you are praying with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend, take turns reading a paragraph each. You might also pray it for a specific person by name, replacing “the people closest to me” with that person’s name. Love grows well when it is spoken aloud and shared with others.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who loves you without limit fill your heart with his steady warmth today. May he give you patience for the people who test you and eyes to see those who need you most. May you walk through this day knowing you are deeply loved, and may that love spill over to everyone you meet.
