BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

These prayers are for the season after trust has been broken, when you want to believe again but do not yet know how. Pray them when you are sitting in the quiet after a hard conversation, when old wounds resurface, or when you are trying to rebuild a relationship with a spouse, friend, child, or coworker. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Rebuilding Trust

Lord, you know how fragile trust feels right now. Someone let me down, or I let someone down, and the ground beneath our relationship still feels unsteady. I replay what happened in my mind, and I catch myself waiting for the next disappointment. Help me be honest about my own hurt without letting it harden into bitterness.

Father, I want to forgive, but forgiveness and trust are not the same thing, and I do not want to pretend they are. Show me which fears are wise and which are simply old pain speaking. Give me the courage to take small, careful steps toward the person I am trying to trust again, and give them the humility to take steps toward me. Where I am the one who must earn back confidence, make me patient and consistent, not demanding or defensive. Heal what is broken between us, and grow something steady in its place. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the doubt rising again. Steady my heart right now. Remind me that you are faithful even when people are not, and that you see what I cannot see about this relationship. Help me take the next honest step and not the biggest leap. Guard my words and my thoughts today, and let your peace settle where suspicion has been living. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 9:10

Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, the LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel foolish for trusting again. It reminds you that your confidence rests in the character of God, who has never abandoned those who seek him, and that this foundation is sturdier than any human promise.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this when your own understanding keeps insisting on proof before you can open your heart. Ask God to straighten your path as you take cautious steps, letting him lead where your self-protection wants to control everything.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this for the part you can play. Ask God to show you what living at peace looks like in this relationship, while recognizing that the other person’s choices are not yours to manage.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this when you feel depleted by repeated hurt. Thank God that his compassion is renewed each morning, and ask him to renew your own capacity to receive grace, one day at a time.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this when forgiveness feels like a debt you cannot pay. Ask God to shape your heart into the kindness and tenderness that mirrors the forgiveness you have received, which makes room for trust to grow again.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this in the early morning, before the day’s conversations begin, or in the evening, when the day’s tensions have had time to settle. Choose a quiet spot where you will not be interrupted, and keep a pen nearby. As you pray, you might write down one specific fear or hope, then return to it when doubt returns later in the week.

Consider asking a trusted friend, pastor, or small group to pray this with you or for you. Trust is rebuilt in community as well as in private, and another voice can help you name what is real without letting fear do the talking. You might also hold something in your hands while praying, such as a cup of tea or a smooth stone, as a physical reminder to keep your heart open and your expectations gentle.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your heart and steady your steps as you rebuild what was lost. May he give you wisdom to know what to hold loosely and what to hold tightly, and may he bring peace where suspicion has lingered. May you grow in confidence not because people are perfect, but because God is faithful.
