BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about blessing children, along with a short reflection on how each one applies to daily life with the young people in your care. It is written for parents, grandparents, teachers, and anyone who wants to speak God’s favor over a child and mean it. These passages share a common thread: children are a gift from the Lord, they are loved by God before they can understand that love, and blessing them is something we can do with our words, our prayers, and our everyday attention.

Verses for Speaking Blessing Over Little Ones

Some of the most direct guidance about blessing children comes from passages where God’s people are told to speak good over their families. These verses are useful for bedtime, for car rides, or for any moment when you want your words to carry weight.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the priestly blessing, and it is short enough to memorize. Try saying it over your child at bedtime, slowly, so they hear the rhythm and know they are being named and kept in God’s care.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls children a heritage from the Lord. When a day feels full of noise and mess, remind yourself that the child in front of you is a gift entrusted to you, and thank God for them specifically before the day ends.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Blessing children here looks like everyday conversation about God, at the table, on the road, at bedtime. Choose one small truth about God to talk about during dinner tonight and let it become a normal part of your household rhythm.

Verses About Children Belonging to the Lord

These passages speak to the assurance that children are known, loved, and welcomed by God. They are especially helpful when you feel anxious about a child’s future or wonder whether you are doing enough.

Mark 10:14

But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Jesus was indignant when His disciples tried to keep children away from Him. Let this shape how you talk about faith with your children, making sure they never feel they are too small or too young to come to Jesus.

Psalm 103:17

But the LORD’s loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children’s children…

(WEB)

God’s love is described as lasting from everlasting to everlasting, and it extends to children and their children. Pray this over your child’s future, trusting that God’s faithfulness reaches further than you can see.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

This verse promises that children will be taught by the Lord, and that great will be their peace. When you are unsure how to teach a hard lesson, ask God to be the true teacher of your child’s heart.

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”

(WEB)

Here Jesus says to let the little children come to Him and not forbid them. Make room in your schedule for simple, unhurried time with your children, and treat that time as a way of bringing them to Jesus.

Verses for Praying Over Children in Difficult Seasons

Every child faces seasons of fear, illness, change, or struggle. These verses offer steady reassurance and give you language when you do not have words of your own.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God’s angels being commanded to guard us in all our ways. Pray it over a child who is walking into a new school or a new situation, asking God to place His protection around them.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

The Lord is described as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. When a child is frightened, picture God holding them that way and say so out loud.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

These verses say each child was knit together by God and is fearfully and wonderfully made. Use this truth to counter discouraging messages a child hears about their body, abilities, or worth.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The Lord keeps you from harm and watches over your coming and going. Pray this as your child leaves for school, a trip, or a night away, and let the words stay with you as you wait for them to return.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb encourages training children in the way they should go. Blessing them in this sense means patiently guiding them toward wisdom, consistency, and faith, one choice at a time.

Luke 2:52

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

(WEB)

Luke says Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and with people. Pray that your child will grow in all these ways, and watch for the small steps of growth you might otherwise overlook.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on index cards and place them where your children will see them, such as a bedroom door, a lunch box note, or the bathroom mirror. Reading them aloud at bedtime or during a morning routine helps the words become familiar to children as well as to you.

You can also pray these verses directly over your children, substituting their name where it fits naturally. Speaking Scripture as prayer keeps your focus on God’s promises rather than your worries, and it gives your children a model of trusting God with their lives.

A Short Prayer for Children

Lord, thank You for the children You have placed in our lives. We recognize that they are Your children first, and that You love them more deeply than we ever could. Help us to speak blessing over them every day, with patient words, honest prayers, and steady example. Protect them from harm that we cannot see, and guard their hearts from fear and discouragement. Teach them to know You, to trust Your goodness, and to come to You with everything they carry. When we fall short as parents, caregivers, and teachers, remind us that Your grace is enough. Let our children grow in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with You and with others. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May you grow strong in faith, gentle in spirit, and joyful in the Lord each day. And may you always know how deeply you are loved by the One who made you.
