These prayers are for birthdays, whether your own or someone you love is turning another year older. Pray them in the morning before the day gets busy, at a small celebration, or quietly when the candles are blown out and the house is finally still. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words from there.

Prayers for Birthdays

Father, thank you for this day and for the gift of another year of life. Birthdays have a way of making us look back and look ahead at the same time. Some of us see how far we have come, and some of us see the things we still hope for and do not yet have. Meet us in both places. Thank you that the years are not measured only by what we accomplish, but held in your care from beginning to end.

Lord, be near to the one whose birthday it is. Some of us are glad to be getting older, and some of us feel the years pressing on our hearts, on our bodies, or on our relationships. Give peace to the anxious, rest to the weary, and gratitude to the ones who have quietly carried more than anyone knew. Help us to celebrate without pretending, and to remember without despair. Let the people around us see that we are loved, not just on this day, but in every season that follows.

Give us wisdom for the years ahead, and a willingness to let go of what we were never meant to carry. Teach us to number our days well, to spend them on what matters, and to stay tender toward the people you have placed in our lives. Bless the coming year with faithfulness, with good work, and with moments of unexpected joy. We trust you with what we cannot see yet. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for another year of life, for the people who remember this day, and for your faithfulness through every season behind us. Be with us in the year ahead, steady our hearts, and help us to live it with gratitude and purpose. Keep us close to you in the ordinary hours. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Pray this verse on a birthday when you feel the passing of time most sharply. Ask God to teach you to count your days honestly, so that you can spend the coming year on what truly matters rather than on what only feels urgent.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly when the birthday brings self-doubt or comparison. Thank God for the way you were made, and ask him to help you see yourself as he sees you, known and wonderfully formed.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This is a good prayer for a birthday that carries sorrow or loss alongside the celebration. Ask for fresh mercy each morning, and trust that God’s faithfulness is new even when the year has been hard.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

Speak this blessing over the person whose birthday it is, using their name in the prayer. It is a simple way to ask God to watch over them, show them kindness, and bring them peace in the year ahead.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when a birthday brings worry about health, money, family, or the future. Bring each concern to God with thanksgiving, and ask him to guard your heart with a peace that makes no sense on paper.

How to Pray This Prayer

The early morning works well for this prayer, especially on the birthday itself. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, read the main prayer through once, and then pause after each paragraph to let the words settle. If you are praying for someone else, you might pray it while they sleep, or write the prayer on a card and leave it with a gift.

Consider inviting others to pray it with you. A family can take turns reading a paragraph around the table, or a group of friends can pray the shorter version together before the cake is cut. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down what God brings to mind, and return to those notes on the next birthday to see how he has answered.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this year and keep the one whose birthday it is. May he make his face shine upon them and give them grace for every step. May they know they are loved, remembered, and held, now and in every year to come.
