1 Timothy 1:11 says that the message Paul preaches is the good news of the glory of the blessed God, and that this message was entrusted to him to carry to others. In plain terms, Paul is saying that the gospel is not his own invention or private opinion. It is God’s good news, and God has placed it in his care. The verse is written by Paul, the apostle, to his younger co-worker Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus.

According to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

What 1 Timothy 1:11 Means

The phrase “the Good News” translates a word meaning the gospel, the announcement of something joyful that has happened. For Paul, that announcement centers on Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection, and the forgiveness and new life that come through him. The verse calls this news “of the glory of the blessed God.” Glory here points to God’s splendor, his worth and radiance, and “blessed” describes him as happy and full in himself, needing nothing from us. The gospel shows us that God is both magnificent and generous.

The verse then says this good news “was committed to my trust.” The idea is of a sacred deposit, something valuable handed over for safekeeping. Paul does not own the message. He is a steward who must guard it faithfully and pass it on without distortion. The verse does not promise Paul an easy path or a comfortable life. It describes a responsibility he has been given, and it asks Timothy and every reader to take seriously what has been entrusted to them.

The Context of 1 Timothy 1:11

First Timothy is one of the letters Paul wrote to pastors he had trained. Paul had left Timothy in Ephesus to correct teachers who were spreading false ideas and getting caught up in speculation, and the letter is full of instructions about sound teaching and healthy church life. Paul writes as an apostle, a messenger commissioned by Christ, and his primary audience is Timothy, though the letter is meant for the church.

The verses just before this one describe the law’s purpose in exposing sin, and verse 11 ties that exposure to the gospel. Verses 12 to 14 then turn to Paul’s own story: he was once a blasphemer and persecutor, but he received mercy and grace. That context changes how the verse reads. Paul is not speaking as someone who has always been righteous. He speaks as a man who knows the gospel rescued him, which is why he trusts it and treasures the responsibility of proclaiming it.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 1:11

2 Timothy 1:14

That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

Paul later tells Timothy to guard the good deposit entrusted to him, using the same image of a precious trust. The two verses together show that guarding the gospel is a lifelong responsibility, one that Timothy must carry by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

Paul declares in Romans that he is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation. This verse expands on why the good news deserves such careful stewardship: it is God’s own power at work to save everyone who believes.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 1:11

Father, you are glorious and blessed, and you have made your good news known to us through Jesus Christ. Thank you for trusting ordinary people with a message this precious. Help me to hold the gospel with care, to speak it truthfully and to live it faithfully. When I feel unworthy or afraid, remind me that the gift and the calling both come from you. Keep me steady in your truth, and let my life point others to the glory of the God who saved me. Amen.
