BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Revelation 2:5 tells the church in Ephesus to remember how far they have drifted, to turn back, and to do again the works they did at the start. Jesus is speaking, through the apostle John, to the congregation in the city of Ephesus, one of seven churches addressed in the opening chapters of Revelation. The warning is firm, but it comes from someone who has already noticed their faithfulness and wants their love restored.

Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your lamp stand out of its place, unless you repent.

What Revelation 2:5 Means

The verse begins with “Remember therefore from where you have fallen.” Jesus asks the church to look back and see the distance between where they were and where they are now. Remembering comes before changing. Before they can repent, they need to notice what has been lost.

Next comes “repent and do the first works.” To repent means to turn around and head the other direction. The “first works” are the deeds they did when their love for Christ was fresh, the acts of service and devotion that flowed from wholehearted affection rather than habit. The verse does not ask them to invent something new. It asks them to return to what was genuine at the beginning.

The verse ends with a warning: if they do not change, Jesus will come to them and remove their lampstand from its place. The lampstand symbolizes the church’s witness and presence in the world. The verse does not promise that a church that repents will never face hardship, but it does make clear that restoration is possible and that God takes the loss of love seriously.

The Context of Revelation 2:5

Revelation is a letter written by John, traditionally identified as the apostle, during a period of pressure on Christians in the Roman world, probably in the late first century. The seven letters in chapters 2 and 3 are addressed to real congregations in western Asia Minor, and each follows a similar pattern of praise, concern, and call to respond.

Just before verse 5, Jesus commends the Ephesians for their hard work, their endurance, their refusal to tolerate evil, and their testing of false teachers. He says they have endured for his name without growing weary. Verse 5 turns on the word “but”: “But I have this against you, that you left your first love.” That context shows the problem is not a lack of effort. Their outward faithfulness has remained, but their inner affection for Christ has cooled, and that is what the verse addresses.

Key Phrases in Revelation 2:5

Ephesians 3:17-19

17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Paul prays that the Ephesian believers would be rooted and grounded in love and would grasp the vastness of Christ’s love. This connects directly to the Revelation passage, because the call to return to first love depends on being anchored in the love God has already shown.

Jeremiah 2:2

“Go, and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘The LORD says, “I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your weddings; how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

God recalls the affection of Israel’s youth, when they followed him in the wilderness. The prophet’s words show that God remembers the early devotion of his people and longs to see it restored, much as Jesus does with the church in Ephesus.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 2:5

Lord, you see the way my heart can grow cool even while my routines keep going. Help me to remember where I began with you, the joy and gratitude that first drew me close. Turn me back toward you in a real and visible way, and give me the courage to change what needs changing. Rekindle in me the love that marked my first days with you, and let my everyday choices show it. Amen.
