BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

First John 2:27 tells believers that the anointing they received from God lives in them and teaches them, so they do not need a human teacher to tell them what is true about God. The apostle John wrote this to a Christian community that was being pulled away by false teachers. He spoke directly to the ordinary believers in that church, reminding them that they already had what they needed to stay faithful.

As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him.

What 1 John 2:27 Means

The word “anointing” points to a gift from God, a kind of spiritual presence or enabling that marks a person as belonging to him. John says this anointing “remains in you,” meaning it is not temporary or occasional. It stays with the believer as an ongoing source of truth and discernment, the way a lamp keeps burning in a room rather than flickering on and off.

The phrase “you don’t need for anyone to teach you” is easy to misread. John is not saying Christians should never learn from pastors, books, or mentors. Elsewhere the New Testament clearly values teaching. His point is narrower: when false teachers claim special knowledge that goes beyond what the believers already received, the believers can test those claims against the truth God has already placed within them.

The verse ends by urging the readers to “remain in him,” which connects their steady faith to their relationship with Christ. The anointing does not operate apart from Christ. It keeps the believers close to him and keeps them from wandering into error.

The Context of 1 John 2:27

First John is a letter traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who wrote to churches he knew well and cared for deeply. The letter repeatedly contrasts light with darkness, truth with lies, and love with hatred. Its readers were facing people who had left the community and were now teaching ideas that denied key truths about Jesus, so John wrote to strengthen those who remained.

The verses just before this one, in 1 John 2:24 to 2:26, tell the readers to hold onto the message they heard from the beginning and say that John is writing specifically about those who would lead them astray. Verse 27 therefore reads as reassurance inside a warning. The believers are not being told to ignore all instruction, but to rest on the foundation they already have while they resist deceivers. The verses that follow, beginning in 2:28, call them to remain in Christ so they will have confidence when he returns.

Key Phrases in 1 John 2:27

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

(WEB)

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach the disciples all things and remind them of what he said. This passage helps explain the teaching work described in 1 John 2:27, showing that the Spirit’s instruction is tied to the words and person of Christ rather than to new or private ideas.

John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

(WEB)

In this verse Jesus says his sheep hear his voice and follow him. It pairs well with 1 John 2:27 because both passages describe believers who recognize the true voice of their Shepherd and are not led astray by voices that do not belong to him.

A Short Prayer From 1 John 2:27

Lord, thank you that you have not left me to guess at the truth on my own. You have placed your anointing within me, and I ask that it would keep me close to you. When voices come that sound clever but pull me away from Christ, help me to test them against what I already know of your word and your character. Teach me to remain in you each day, steady and unashamed, trusting your work in my heart. Amen.
