BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

First Corinthians 2:7 teaches that the wisdom Paul shares is God’s own wisdom, something that was hidden from human sight but planned by God before the world began, and that its purpose is our glory. Paul is saying that the good news of Christ is not a clever human idea but a secret plan of God that only God could reveal. Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth, a busy port city where people prized sharp speech and philosophy, and he reminded them that the gospel comes from God rather than from human cleverness.

But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory…

What 1 Corinthians 2:7 Means

The phrase “we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery” means that Paul is talking about truth that people could not work out on their own. In the New Testament, a “mystery” is not a puzzle to be solved by clever thinking but a plan that has been unveiled. The gospel was not guessed at by the wise of this age. It was made known by God when he chose to show it.

The words “the wisdom that has been hidden” describe something that was once concealed from view. Paul is not saying God was keeping secrets out of spite. He is saying the depth of God’s plan lay beyond what human reasoning could reach until God opened it up. The next words, “which God foreordained before the worlds,” tell us this plan was settled long before creation, so the cross was never an accident or a backup plan. Finally, “for our glory” shows the purpose of the plan: God meant it to bring believers into a share of his honor and life. The verse does not promise that every question will be answered now, but it does assure us that God’s plan is wise, ancient, and good.

The Context of 1 Corinthians 2:7

First Corinthians was written by Paul, who founded the church in Corinth, to a congregation that was divided by rival loyalties and impressed by rhetorical skill. Just before this verse, in verses 4 and 5, Paul says his preaching came not in persuasive human wisdom but in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that faith would rest on God’s power rather than on human argument. Verse 6 speaks of a wisdom among the mature, which is not the wisdom of this world or its rulers who are coming to nothing.

Verse 8 adds that none of the rulers of this world understood God’s wisdom, because if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Verse 9 then quotes Scripture about things no eye has seen, and verse 10 explains that God has revealed these things through the Spirit. Read in this setting, verse 7 is the center of an argument: the Corinthians should not trust in human cleverness, because the true wisdom is God’s hidden plan, now made known by the Spirit.

Key Phrases in 1 Corinthians 2:7

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.

(WEB)

This verse urges trust in the Lord rather than in one’s own understanding, which echoes Paul’s contrast between human wisdom and the wisdom God reveals. Reading it alongside 1 Corinthians 2:7 shows that God’s wisdom is always received in dependence on him.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James promises that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask, which fits the picture in 1 Corinthians 2:7 of wisdom that comes from God rather than from human effort. Together they encourage believers to seek divine understanding through prayer.

A Short Prayer From 1 Corinthians 2:7

Lord, you have not left us to guess at the meaning of life or the way of salvation. You planned your wisdom before the world began, and in your mercy you have revealed it through Christ and by your Spirit. Teach me to receive that wisdom with humility rather than pride. Where I am tempted to trust my own cleverness, turn my heart back to you. Thank you that your plan is for my good and for your glory. Amen.
