BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

First John 3:10 says that the difference between God’s children and the devil’s children shows up in behavior. Someone who does not practice righteousness, or who does not love their fellow believer, does not belong to God. John wrote this near the end of his letter to a community of Christians facing confusion and division, so that they could recognize true faith by how people actually live.

In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.

What 1 John 3:10 Means

The verse begins by saying that something “is revealed,” meaning it becomes visible to everyone. John does not mean that God’s children are identified by a secret password or a claim to belong. They are identified by what they do. The word “revealed” points to the way a tree’s fruit shows what kind of tree it is.

Next John names two marks. The first is doing righteousness, which means living in the right and just way God has shown. The second is loving one’s brother, which in this letter means loving fellow believers in the community. Both are concrete. John is not describing a feeling or a theological opinion, but steady patterns of conduct.

The verse does not promise that a believer will never fail, and it does not claim that a person’s sins are unforgivable. John elsewhere in this same letter says that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9). What the verse does say is that a life with no righteousness and no love is not the life of someone who belongs to God. It asks readers to look honestly at the direction of their lives.

The Context of 1 John 3:10

First John is a letter, most often attributed to the apostle John, written to Christians who were sharing a common faith but had been shaken by false teachers. Those teachers seem to have claimed special knowledge of God while living in ways that contradicted Christian love and holiness. John writes to help his readers test whether a person’s words about God match their actions.

The verses just before 3:10 explain that the Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil, and that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning (3:8-9). The verses that follow say that the message the readers heard from the beginning is to love one another, using Cain as the example of hatred leading to murder (3:11-12). Read in this setting, 3:10 is the hinge: it shows that the children of God and the children of the devil are distinguished by the deeds that the surrounding verses describe.

Key Phrases in 1 John 3:10

1 John 3:18

My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

(WEB)

This verse follows directly with a call to love “in deed and in truth,” not merely in words. It deepens the point of 3:10 by insisting that love must be shown in action, which is how the children of God are made visible.

Matthew 7:16

By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

(WEB)

Jesus says that people are known by their fruits, the same principle John applies to God’s children. The image of fruit showing the nature of a tree explains why John looks at conduct to see who belongs to God.

A Short Prayer From 1 John 3:10

Father, you have made it clear that belonging to you shows itself in how we live. Search my heart and my habits, and show me where I have not practiced righteousness or where I have withheld love from a brother or sister in your family. Give me the courage to name those places honestly and the humility to bring them to you. Let my daily choices reflect the life that comes from you, so that others can see the family resemblance. Thank you for forgiving me when I fall short and for shaping me by your Spirit. Amen.
