Proverbs 2:19 warns that people who go into the company and path of a seductive, deceptive woman do not come back out, and they never reach the way of life. Solomon, traditionally regarded as the author of the proverbs in this part of the book, is speaking to a young son, urging him to pursue wisdom so that he will be protected from a particular kind of moral ruin.

What Proverbs 2:19 Means

The verse begins with “None who go to her,” which describes a pattern rather than a single mistake. The image is of someone who keeps walking toward a destination that looks inviting but leads somewhere harmful. Going to her is a habit of heart and feet, not one careless glance.

“Return again” means coming back to a healthy path after drifting. The verse says that those caught in this pattern rarely find their way back. The point is not that God has shut the door on repentance, since the wider book of Proverbs holds out hope for those who turn. Rather, it describes how deeply a life can become entangled once it follows folly for long enough.

“The paths of life” refers to the good, upright way that leads to flourishing. The verse does not promise that every failed person is beyond help, but it does warn that the road of seduction tends to keep people from the road of wisdom. You should read it as a serious warning, not as a verdict on any individual.

The Context of Proverbs 2:19

The book of Proverbs is a collection of instruction written as a father speaking to his son. Chapter 2 is a long appeal to seek wisdom earnestly, as one would search for silver or hidden treasure. Verses 16 through 19 describe the strange woman, a figure who stands for seductive folly and infidelity, and verse 17 notes that she forsakes the covenant of her God. The warning is therefore both ethical and spiritual.

Verses 20 through 22 are the answer to the warning. The son is told to walk in the way of good people and to keep the paths of the righteous, with the promise that the upright will dwell in the land while the wicked are cut off from it. Seen this way, verse 19 is the shadow side of a contrast: the path of folly ends in loss, while the path of wisdom leads to a secure and blessed life.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 2:19

Proverbs 4:14-15

14 Don’t enter into the path of the wicked. Don’t walk in the way of evil men. 15 Avoid it, and don’t pass by it. Turn from it, and pass on.

These verses tell the reader not to enter the path of the wicked and to avoid going along its way. They reinforce the warning of Proverbs 2:19 by urging the wise to turn away early and keep their distance from temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Paul assures believers that God provides a way out of temptation. This connects with the call to turn back in Proverbs 2:19, showing that the Lord offers strength and an exit to those who seek him before they are carried far down a harmful road.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 2:19

Lord, you know how easily my feet wander toward things that promise pleasure and leave me empty. Make me quick to notice the direction of my steps and slow to excuse small compromises. Give me a love for your wisdom that is stronger than the pull of folly. If I have already drifted, draw me back to your paths of life and give me the humility to return. Keep me near people who walk with you, and let my choices show that I want to dwell in the place of the upright. Amen.
