2 Timothy 3:14 tells believers to keep steady in the truth they were taught, because they know who taught it to them. Paul writes this near the end of his life to his younger co-worker Timothy, a pastor in the city of Ephesus, urging him to stay faithful when false teachers are spreading confusion.

But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.

What 2 Timothy 3:14 Means

The verse opens with “But you,” which sets Timothy apart from the people Paul has just described, the impostors and deceivers who are growing worse and worse. Timothy is told to “remain,” meaning to stay put and not drift away, in “the things which you have learned and have been assured of.” Those things are the core teachings of the Christian faith that Timothy has received and come to trust as true.

The final clause, “knowing from whom you have learned them,” gives the reason for staying steady. Timothy’s confidence does not rest on whatever is popular or new, but on the people who handed the teaching down to him, especially Paul himself and his own mother and grandmother, as Paul mentions in the verses that follow. The verse does not promise that every hard question will be answered or that faithfulness will be easy. It calls for a settled loyalty to what has been trustworthily passed on.

The Context of 2 Timothy 3:14

Second Timothy is one of the letters traditionally attributed to the apostle Paul, written while he was imprisoned, likely shortly before his death. Timothy had been a companion on Paul’s missionary journeys and was now leading the church in Ephesus, facing opposition both from outside and from within. Paul’s tone is personal and urgent, almost like a father passing the work on to a son.

The verses just before this one describe Paul’s own sufferings in places like Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, and warn that anyone who wants to live godly in Christ Jesus will face persecution. Verse 13 then says evil people will grow worse and worse. Read against that backdrop, verse 14 is a steadying word: the world may shift, but Timothy should keep holding to what he has been taught by people he can trust.

Key Phrases in 2 Timothy 3:14

2 Timothy 3:15

From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

The verse just after verse 14 explains that the holy Scriptures are what make a person wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. It shows that the teaching Timothy was asked to hold fast to is grounded in the sacred writings he has known since childhood.

1 Corinthians 15:1-2

1 Now I declare to you, brothers, the Good News which I preached to you, which also you received, in which you also stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold firmly the word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

(WEB)

Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel they received and in which they stand, and he warns them to hold firmly to the message they were taught. The language closely parallels the call in 2 Timothy 3:14 to remain in what has been received.

A Short Prayer From 2 Timothy 3:14

Lord, you know how easily my thoughts wander and how quickly the voices around me can pull me off course. Help me to remain in the truth you have given me, and to hold it with settled confidence rather than restless doubt. Thank you for the faithful people who taught me your ways, and for the Scriptures that have been passed down to me. Keep my heart steady today, and make me faithful in the small, daily choices that keep me close to you. Amen.
