BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

First Timothy 4:10 explains why Paul and his co-workers keep working and keep suffering for the gospel: they have fixed their hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. The verse is part of a letter from the apostle Paul to his younger colleague Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus. Paul writes to encourage Timothy to stay faithful even when ministry is costly.

For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have set our trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

What 1 Timothy 4:10 Means

The phrase “to this end” points back to what Paul has just said about training yourself in godliness. The hard work and the reproach he and his partners endure are not random hardships. They are the result of a settled commitment to a God who is alive and active, not a lifeless idol that the surrounding culture might prefer.

Paul describes God as “the Savior of all men,” which means God’s saving purpose reaches widely, extending beyond any single nation or group. He then adds “especially of those who believe,” marking a distinction: God’s saving work is offered to everyone, and it is experienced in a particular way by those who trust Him. The verse does not promise that every person will automatically believe, nor does it spell out how the word “Savior” plays out in every case. It does affirm that the living God is the one who saves and that Paul’s confidence rests entirely in Him.

The Context of 1 Timothy 4:10

First Timothy is traditionally attributed to Paul, written to a young leader in the church at Ephesus. The letter gives practical guidance on sound teaching, church order, and the conduct of those who serve. Scholars differ somewhat on the precise dating and circumstances of the letter, but its pastoral purpose is clear: Timothy must guard the truth and model faithfulness.

The verses just before this one contrast worthless myths and “old wives’ fables” with godliness, which Paul says has value in all things and holds a promise for both the present life and the life to come. Verse 10 grounds that claim in the character of God. Because Paul’s hope is in the living God who saves, the pursuit of godliness is not a vague moral ideal but a response to a real and reliable Savior. Verses 11 through 13 then turn to Timothy directly, urging him to teach these things and to set an example.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 4:10

1 Timothy 2:3-4

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.

This passage also describes God as Savior and states that He desires all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. Reading it alongside verse 10 deepens the sense that God’s saving purpose is wide and that Paul’s ministry flows from that desire.

2 Timothy 1:12

For this cause I also suffer these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.

In this verse Paul speaks of suffering for the gospel yet remaining confident, because he knows whom he has believed. It echoes the trust in the living God found in 1 Timothy 4:10 and shows how that trust sustains a person through hardship.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 4:10

Lord, you are the living God, and my hope rests in you and not in my own strength or in the approval of others. When my work feels heavy and my faith is met with resistance, remind me that you are the Savior who keeps your promises. Help me to labor faithfully and to endure reproach with a steady heart, trusting that you are at work even when I cannot see the fruit. Thank you that your salvation reaches so widely and that you receive all who come to you in faith. Amen.
