BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

These prayers are for the hours before surgery, when the forms are signed, the gown is on, and the waiting feels longer than the procedure itself. Pray them in the waiting room, in a pre-op bay, or at home the night before. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what you are actually feeling.

Prayers Before Surgery

Lord, I come to you before this surgery with a lot on my mind. I am afraid of what the doctors will find and what they might not be able to fix. I am thinking about the people who depend on me, the work I will miss, and the bills that keep arriving. I am also afraid of the anesthesia, of waking up confused, and of the pain I know is coming. Please calm the part of me that keeps running ahead to the worst case.

Be with the surgeon, the nurses, and everyone in that operating room. Give them steady hands, clear minds, and attention that does not slip. Guide every decision made today, and let the people caring for me be people who care. If there are complications, let them be caught early. If there is a question no one can answer yet, let me rest in knowing that you already know the answer.

Whatever happens in the next few hours, I want to trust you with it. Keep my family close while I am under, and let them feel your peace while they wait. Bring me back to consciousness, to my loved ones, and to the life you are still giving me. I place my body, my fear, and my future in your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am scared, and I need you right now. Steady my breathing and quiet my thoughts. Be with the surgeon and the team, and with the family waiting for me. Hold me through the surgery and bring me home to them afterward. I trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

When you feel the ground shifting under you before a procedure, pray this verse slowly and name the specific fear you are carrying. It reminds you that God is a refuge you can run to, not a distant idea you have to reach for.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this as God speaking directly to you in the pre-op bay. Let each phrase answer a particular fear, whether it is being alone, being weak, or being overwhelmed, and thank God for his presence in each one.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the anxious thoughts that keep circling about the outcome. Turn each worry into a specific request, then pause and breathe, expecting God’s peace to guard your heart and mind.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this for the moment you are wheeled away from your family and into the unknown. Ask God to keep you from harm as you go out and as you come back, trusting that his watch does not end when the doors close.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

When the room is loud and the clock feels cruel, ask Jesus to give you the peace he promised. Name the anxious places in your heart and invite him to settle each one, receiving a peace that does not depend on the test results.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the main prayer the night before surgery, or early the morning of, before the day becomes busy. A quiet corner of your room, a hospital chapel if one is available, or a seat by the window in the waiting area all work well. Keep a pen and paper nearby so you can write down any fear that surfaces while you pray and bring it back to God by name.

Your hands can carry part of the prayer too. Hold a small object such as a smooth stone, a wedding ring, or a rosary, and let your thumb move over it each time a worry rises. Ask a friend, a pastor, or a family member to pray the same words over you while you listen, so you are not carrying this alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into the operating room and stand beside you while you sleep. May his hands guide the surgeon, his peace guard your heart, and his faithfulness meet you when you wake. May your family feel his nearness as they wait, and may you rest tonight in the knowledge that you are held.
