BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Luke 4:15 tells us that Jesus taught regularly in the local synagogues of Galilee, and that people from every part of the community respected and praised him for it. The verse is a short summary, not a detailed scene, and it marks the start of a period when his public ministry was gaining steady momentum. It is spoken by the Gospel writer Luke, who is describing what happened in the region after Jesus returned from his forty days in the wilderness.

He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

What Luke 4:15 Means

The phrase “he taught in their synagogues” describes a pattern, not a single event. Synagogues were the local gathering places where Jewish communities met for prayer, Scripture reading and instruction, especially on the Sabbath. Jesus was not confined to one town or one building; he moved from synagogue to synagogue, speaking to ordinary people in the places where they already came together to hear God’s word.

The words “being glorified by all” tell us how his teaching was received. The Greek idea here is of being praised, honored or given high regard. Luke is saying that the response was broadly positive at this stage, and that his reputation was growing among people from different backgrounds. The verse does not explain the reasons for that praise, and it does not promise that every hearer will remain in agreement with him. It simply records that the early response was warm.

The Context of Luke 4:15

Luke wrote this Gospel to a careful reader, likely a non-Jewish believer named Theophilus, who wanted an orderly and accurate account of Jesus’s life. Luke’s Gospel traditionally is attributed to a companion of Paul, and its opening chapters show a deep interest in how Jesus fulfills the story of Israel. Verse 14 says that news about him spread through the surrounding area, and verse 15 shows that this news led to his teaching being welcomed in many places.

The verses that follow change how we read this summary. In verse 16 Jesus comes to Nazareth, where he grew up, and reads from Isaiah, announcing good news for the poor and release for the oppressed. So the praise in verse 15 becomes a setting for a deeper and more challenging moment. The honor he receives in the wider region sits beside a teaching that will soon confront the very people who first knew him.

Key Phrases in Luke 4:15

Matthew 4:23

Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

(WEB)

Matthew describes a similar pattern of Jesus teaching in synagogues across Galilee and healing among the people. Reading it alongside Luke 4:15 helps you see that the two Gospels are describing the same early season of ministry from different angles.

Mark 1:39

He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out demons.

(WEB)

Mark records Jesus going throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. Placing this verse beside Luke 4:15 shows how the early Gospel writers each highlight the same steady pattern of teaching in the local meeting places.

A Short Prayer From Luke 4:15

Lord Jesus, you went into the ordinary places where people gathered to hear God’s word, and you taught them with faithfulness and love. Help me to honor your word wherever I am called to speak or listen, whether in a large gathering or a quiet room. Keep my heart steady when I am praised and when I am overlooked, so that my confidence rests in you alone. Teach me to serve with humility and to trust that your work is never measured only by the applause of others. Amen.
