BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These daily prayers for couples are written for husbands and wives who want to bring their marriage before God each day, whether they are newly married, raising children, caring for aging parents, or simply trying to stay close after years together. Pray them in the morning before the day pulls you apart, or in the evening as you settle down. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayers for Couples

Lord, thank You for bringing us together. We come to You this morning knowing that we cannot love each other well on our own strength. Some days we are patient and kind, and other days we are short with each other, distracted by work, money, or worries we have not shared. Forgive us for the moments we have failed one another, and help us to come to You first when we are hurt or tired.

Father, we ask You to guard our hearts and our home. Be the center of our marriage so that our love for each other grows from our love for You. Give us eyes to see the good in each other, ears willing to listen before we speak, and hands ready to serve. Where there is tension between us, soften it. Where there is silence, bring words. Where there is distance, draw us close again.

We also bring You the people and the burdens we carry together, and the ones we carry alone. Give us wisdom for the decisions ahead and peace for the things we cannot control. Let our home be a place of rest and welcome for others, and let the way we treat each other point them toward Your faithfulness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we need You right now. Calm our hearts and help us speak gently to each other. Remind us that we are on the same side, and that You are with us in this moment. Give us grace for the next hour and the courage to make things right if we have been unkind. Keep us close to You and to each other. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God for the bond He created between you. Ask Him to strengthen the commitment that holds you together, especially on the days when leaving or giving up feels easier.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly, pausing after each quality it names. Ask God to show you where you need to grow in patience, kindness, and forgiveness toward your spouse today.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the shared work of your marriage. Thank God that you do not have to stand alone, and ask Him to help you lift each other up when one of you falls.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to clothe you both in compassion, humility, and gentleness. Pray especially for the grace to bear with each other and to forgive as the Lord has forgiven you.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God as a reminder that your home is built on His strength rather than your own effort. Ask Him to be the foundation under every plan you make together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time when you can both be present, such as over breakfast, in the car before work, or at the end of the day while sitting on the edge of the bed. Hold hands, or place a hand on your spouse’s arm, as you pray. The physical touch helps keep you both focused and reminds you that you are praying as one.

If you are not able to pray together, pray the prayer on your own and speak your spouse’s name as you do. You might also ask a close friend, a pastor, or a small group to pray for your marriage, and let them know which parts of this prayer matter most to you right now.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this couple and keep them. May He make His face shine on them and give them peace. May their love grow deeper with every season, and may their home be filled with grace, laughter, and quiet trust in the God who holds them both.
