This page offers prayers for the stretch just before a big change, whether that is a new job, a move, a marriage, a diagnosis, a child leaving home, or a decision that will reshape the next few years. Pray these words in the days or hours before the change arrives, when your mind is full of what might go wrong. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers Before a Big Change

Lord, you know what is coming, and I do not. I feel the weight of it in my chest and in my sleep. I am excited about what lies ahead, and I am also afraid of losing what I know, of getting it wrong, of not being enough for the people who depend on me. Quiet my mind tonight. Help me set down the lists I keep making in my head and remember that you have been faithful through every change I have walked through before.

Give me clear thinking for the practical details and a steady heart for the parts I cannot control. Go before me into the new place, the new role, the new season. Let the people who will be with me there feel your kindness through me. If I am tempted to rush, slow me down. If I am tempted to freeze, give me the next small step. Keep my family close and my priorities straight. Whatever shifts, let my identity rest in you and not in the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am standing at the edge of something new and my heart is racing. Calm me now. Hold the parts of this change I cannot see, and go ahead of me into each hour. Remind me that you are already there. Give me enough courage for today and trust for tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are facing water you have not crossed before. Ask God to be with you through the deep parts of the change, not only after it is over.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly before a big move or new responsibility. Let it become a plain request: be strong and courageous in the specific place God has put you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this when you feel tempted to map out every outcome. Pray that God would guide your steps even where your own understanding runs out.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring this passage to God when anxiety is rising about the unknowns. Name each worry in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as you leave one season and enter another. Ask the Lord to guard your going out and your coming in, in every part of the change.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early morning before the day fills up or the stillness after everyone has gone to bed. Sit somewhere you can be undisturbed, and keep a pen nearby. As you pray, write down the specific fears that come up, then read them back to God one by one. Writing slows the racing thoughts and gives your prayer concrete shape.

If you are praying with a spouse, a friend, or a small group, invite them to read the prayer with you, taking a line each. Give them permission to add their own requests for the change ahead. Many people find it helpful to end by holding an open hand, a small physical sign that they are releasing control and receiving whatever comes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new room and every unfamiliar road. May he steady your hands when they shake and steady your heart when it races. May you know, in the middle of the change, that you are seen, held, and never left alone.
